My name is Carolyn and I graduated in 2007 from Wittenberg University (OH) with a B.A. in English and Minor in Music (flute). While at Wittenberg University, I informally tutored English and taught flute lessons to middle school students. I have worked with students on both the elementary school and middle school levels teaching English Language Arts and Music. I have experience working with students in grades 4-10 in English Language Arts.
I graduated in 2009 from Simmons College (MA) with a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (M.A.T.) in Secondary Education, specifically middle school. I completed my student teaching at Pollard Middle School in Needham, MA-8th grade English and am now certified by the Commonwealth of MA to teach English (5-8). In addition to my coursework at Simmons College, I played flute/piccolo for the Colleges of the Fenway Orchestra and I continue to serve as the piccoloist.
I love working with children in all capacities and I obtained my second Master's degree (M.S.) at the University of La Verne, in Southern California, to become a Child Life Specialist. I have volunteered in the Child Life departments at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in the Pediatric Emergency Department and at Connecticut Children's Medical Center on the Hematology/Oncology in-patient floor, and completed a child life practicum at Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach, in Long Beach, CA and I completed my child life internship to become a Child Life Specialist.
I am currently at Simmons College working on my M.S. Ed in special education, grades 5-12. I am working on my internship, where I work as a collaborative team member. I provide individualized instruction, small group instruction, resource room support, inclusion support, and whole class instruction to students who experience academic and behavioral challenges. I have experience modifying general education curriculum and providing accommodations to students in English, math, science, history, and in a specialized writing class.
When I design lesson plans I lay out the lesson with objectives, activities, and assessments that will reach a range of students below level, on level, and advanced to ensure that each student will have a positive learning experience. When I tutor, I first see where the student is at and what the student's strengths and weaknesses are and then design a plan accordingly.
Teaching 8th grade English was challenging but I enjoyed working with the students and watching them grow. I taught Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I engaged the students through group work, acting, and lecture. I worked with individual students on reading comprehension skills and the basic foundation for understanding Shakespeare. I taught Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The students participated in group work activities, a directed reading activity, and I showed them clips from a documentary on Mark Twain. I also taught a mini unit on speeches because all students were required to write a speech for a grade and the best speeches would be read at the eighth grade graduation.
During my time in the Medfield, MA Public Schools I taught 6th grade English and taught the novel Harris and Me by Gary Paulsen and grammar. The students doing a lot of group work, acting/reading, and response to the novel writing pieces to keep the students engaged in the story. I also taught the elements of fiction during this unit. For the grammar unit I had the students write a song to remember the pronouns, and I used a grammar book to help the students learn nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns.
I am very creative and I am able to use my creativity to plan fun and interesting lessons for the students. I am also able to incorporate my knowledge from college English courses and the Arts into my lessons by modifying the material to make it understandable and accessible to the students. When I worked with seventh grade students, I taught the students about the Harlem Renaissance in order to get them ready to study Langston Hughes. An example of my creativity is when I was teaching poetry and the lesson was focused around teaching different types of poetry. I set up stations and each station was focused on a different type of poetry. The students went to each station in groups of four and came away with an original poem that could be put in their poetry books.
I am also an experienced and accomplished flutist and piccoloist having considerable experience on both. Throughout high school and college, I served as principal flutist and solo piccoloist for the band and I also participated in a variety of chamber music ensembles such as flute choir (bass flute, alto flute, concert flute, and piccolo), a flute duo, a flute and violin duo, a woodwind quintet and I have also auditioned for and been selected to play the bass flute in the National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir. I have also been a member of state honor bands on both flute and piccolo at the high school and college level. While at Wittenberg University, I played the flute for several musical groups on campus, including for student recitals and with the choirs. I also did much solo performing throughout high school and college, including playing a flute concerto with my high school band my senior year.
I am comfortable teaching beginner through advanced flute students and also those who are interested in learning to play the piccolo. While a graduate student at the University of La Verne, I taught flute lessons to children in elementary and middle school. While at Wittenberg University, I taught flute lessons to middle school students.
It is my goal to combine my love of English and the Arts, my creativity, intelligence, and my range of experience, and use those skills to be an enthusiastic, intelligent, compassionate tutor in both English and flute. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. I am a certified English teacher in Massachusetts with lots of teaching experience. I have a teaching license for English grades 5-8, a master's degree in education and also a master's degree in child life. I will be going back to graduate school to obtain certification as a reading specialist.
I have worked with children both in the classroom setting and also in the hospital setting. I have worked with children who have dyslexia. My approach to this type of teaching is to break down the instruction into small chunks and then provide ample practice opportunities for the student. When I teach spelling to a student who has dyslexia, I use flashcards to show the word, say the word, and then have the student practice saying the word and also writing it. After the word is written a few times, I include it in sentences and have the student practice writing the word correctly in a sentence. In addition to the flashcards, I use pictures to go along with the word.
I have much experience working with children in grades K-6 both in the classroom setting and individually. My teaching experience with this age group includes teaching the basics of the English language and teaching fundamental reading and writing skills.
I am an experienced flutist and piccoloist having 15 years of experience on the flute and 12 years of experience on the piccolo. I was first chair flute my sophomore and senior years in high school (we had 2 bands-one for freshman and sophomores and 1 for juniors and seniors). I was also a member of a flute duo and woodwind quintet that played music for community events. I also participated in the CT Honor Band festival on piccolo. I served as piccoloist during those same years. I served as teaching assistant to the band director my senior year and my duties included helping with flute lessons and I started a small flute choir.
At Wittenberg University, I was piccoloist for the college symphonic band all four years and also participated in the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association on flute and piccolo representing Wittenberg University. I was also a member of the Wittenberg University Student Woodwind Quintet and a flute and violin duo. Both groups performed concerts on campus and in the community. I taught flute lessons to beginning and intermediate students at the middle school level in OH. In the summer of 2007, I was selected as a member of the National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir on the bass flute. I currently play the piccolo for the Colleges of the Fenway Orchestra in Boston.
I also have extensive experience with flute choirs having been a member of the Wittenberg University Flute Choir (bass flute), The National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir (bass flute), and the Colleges of the Fenway Orchestra Flute Choir (alto flute).
I am comfortable teaching beginning to advanced flute players and I can also teach those students who are interested in learning the piccolo. I am also comfortable getting students of like-ability together to play chamber music and music written for flute choir.
My grammatical teaching skills include parts of speech, pronouns, diagramming sentences, sentence structure, understanding several grammatical rules (ex. who/whom, that/which), and punctuation.

As an English teacher/tutor, I have taught phonics. When I teach phonics, I go over word sounds, syllable/consonant, stress/accent marks, and how to sound out words. I like to use recordings to help my students learn to pronounce the word(s) correctly. I also use flashcards that show the stresses to aid in pronunciation.
Teaching study skills is a strength of mine. Specifically, I can teach how to effectively study for a quiz or test using a variety of methods, such as note cards, and using different colors of highlighters for different information found within a text in order to better organize the information; I also teach organizational skills and categorization skills to help students better understand how to study effectively and efficiently.
