History is, I feel, about the "so what." How does what happened one hundred, one thousand, or ten thousand years ago matter to society today and, more specifically, to me? History is more than just names and numbers (dates). Historical events effect the way we live today, and most of know that intuitively. For example, teachers are known to tell their students not to run with scissors. Why? Because they have seen their share of past accidents, that is, they know that historically, running with scissors is a really bad idea.

My Ph.D. in Islamic Studies was completed as a Research Degree, which means that, with the intermittent help of my doctoral Supervisor, I independently researched and wrote my thesis; there were no quizzes or tests. This has, in part, shaped my thinking in terms of assessment and grading. While quizzes and tests have their place, I think that demonstrating the connections of history via project based assessment is far move valuable as a measure of understanding. Grading, then, becomes a bit more empathetic, as it's entirely reasonable to have a scale that goes from, say 50 - 100, instead of 0 - 100. Taken together -- project based assessment with an adjusted scale -- students begin to feel empowered and encouraged to learn about and from history and, maybe even get a little excited.

I am absolutely convinced that everyone can learn about and from history, and do so without glazed eyes, yawning, and falling asleep after five minutes. Seriously, hi
