About Jonathan

I've been teaching for years -- little kids, high school students, college students, Japanese professionals and retirees.

Japanese learners, welcome! I feel your pain. I took the college classes and learned how little they teach you. I somehow learned anyway -- did a dissertation on Japan and am now a professional translator. It took me many years of sweat and toil. I'll save you time and suffering by showing you what really works. (I'll also bring you to my wife and her friends. She says she taught me my Japanese -- judge for yourself!)

Worried about the SAT or GRE? There's no mystery to raising your score -- I've been trained in this, and I'll walk you through it in a few lessons, giving you manageable assignments to complete between sessions. I reduce test prep to four components: 1) time-saving tricks that allow you to relax and focus on the material; 2) mastering a small knowledge base and learning to see past traps in the questions to the piece of that knowledge base you need to find the answer; 3) building muscle memory that will keep you from freaking out in the test room; and 4) special tips to ensure that you peak on test day. Pay Kaplan a lot for long sessions with a bunch of students, or pay less for more with me.

Overwhelmed by a paper or research project? We'll break it down and get you in the driver's seat. I've been there, many times. Some great teachers showed me the way out,and I'll show you. Put your mind at ease. Need a grammar check? I'm the best -- it's that simple.

Do you want to improve your English? Have you tried expensive language schools? Why didn't they work? Because the teacher gave every student the same lesson! Every student needs a tailored approach; I study you to see how you learn, and then I design lessons only for you. Did a private tutor disappoint you? Why? Because the tutor knows how to talk, not how to teach. Try a real professional.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have a Ph.D. in political science. As a Ph.D. student, I was a teaching assistant for five years. In addition to teaching course material, I often advised students on matters such as whether and where to transfer, how, whether, and where to apply to graduate school, and choice of major. I have taught English to Japanese students of all ages, and as part of teaching English I often advised people considering college or graduate school in the US and helped them write their personal statements.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught speakers of Japanese for over ten years, both one-on-one and in larger classes.

For two years, I taught English to European students in a language school in San Diego.

As a Ph.D. student in political science, I helped fellow students from overseas to speak well enough to teach and to conduct interviews in English.

I continue to work with English learners in the field of biomedical research.

Japanese

I hold a Ph.D. in political science, specializing in Japan. I have six years experience as a translator and interpreter.

Proofreading

I am a Ph.D. in political science, have worked full-time as a proofreader and editor for six years, and have worked privately with many graduate students and professional scholars. My clients include native speakers of English, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish, and cover a broad spectrum of the social sciences and the biomedical research community. From first conception to final polishing and proofreading of your writing project, I provide exceptional value and impeccable quality control.
