About Rachel

I'm a certified high school English teacher with over five years of experience teaching high school English. I've taught at multiple grade and skill levels, providing modified instruction, as well as teaching at the honors and AP (Advanced Placement) levels.

I've had a variety of teaching experiences. While earning my Master's degree in English from Northeastern University, I taught their freshman English course and tutored in the college writing center. When my husband's work took us to another state, I taught at a community college as well, and enjoyed working with adult students. I taught the English portion of an SAT prep course for two years as well. I've also taught summer school for middle through high school students.

My approach to teaching is to engage students through creativity and a supportive learning environment so that students increase their confidence along with their abilities. I enjoy helping students to see and value their own progress. I adapt lessons to the current skill level of my students while pushing them to challenge themselves.

I love reading, writing, and teaching, and I'd be happy to speak to you about your goals and tutoring needs. I look forward to working with students at all levels to improve reading and writing skills, to prepare for the SAT, MCAS, or AP Literature tests, or to improve college essays.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I've worked with many students on their college essays. I help students to choose a topic that matters and portray their unique, authentic selves in a way that highlights their strengths. I can also help students improve essays so that they showcase strong writing skills.

English

I'm a certified high school English teacher with more than five years of experience. I've taught English at multiple levels, working with students who struggle, who speak English as a second language, and who have special needs. I've also taught honors and AP English (Literature).

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with ESL students at multiple grade levels on reading, writing, and communication skills. I think it's important to help these students showcase their strengths as they improve their skills with English. I've also taken and passed the Massachusetts RETELL course.

Grammar

I have a lot of experience teaching grammar to students at multiple grade levels. I think that teaching grammar like a puzzle to be solved helps students connect to its concepts. I believe in teaching grammar in context, and helping students to see why using proper grammar is important.

Literature

I love reading and helping students to connect with what they read. I've worked with students at multiple grade and skill levels, from sixth grade up through college. I'm comfortable and experienced working with fiction and nonfiction texts in a variety of genres (including poetry, novels, short stories, etc.).

Praxis

I took the Praxis I (core) and Praxis II exams as I was completing graduate coursework with St. Joseph's University. I passed both, and on my Praxis II exam, I got a perfect score and received a certificate from ETS. I'd be happy to help you work on reading, writing, and analytical skills to help you succeed on the Praxis test.

Proofreading

My experience as an English teacher at multiple levels means that I have done a lot of proofreading with my students. I can identify errors and coach students on how to change their writing to make it more effective. I also work as a freelance proofreader now, working on a variety of projects.

Reading

Reading is a key skill for everyone, at any age. As an English teacher, I've worked with students in grades 6-12 on reading strategies so that they can approach more challenging texts with confidence.

SAT Reading

I taught the SAT prep course at my school for two years. I'm a certified English teacher with over five years of experience in the public school system, as well as experience teaching and tutoring at the college level. I can teach students strategies to help with the SAT Reading test.

SAT Writing

As an English teacher, I'm experienced teaching the necessary strategies to answer writing questions. I can also help students to improve on the essay portion of the test, if they are planning to write that section. During my 2 years teaching an SAT prep. course, I used practice questions, discussion, and creative strategies to help students with this portion of the test.

Study Skills

As an English teacher, I've worked with many students on developing study skills. I've taught grades 9-12 at multiple levels, and I've also taught summer school for grades 6-12. I can help students to identify issues and come up with personalized solutions to help them to focus and improve.

Vocabulary

I am a certified English teacher with more than five years of experience in the public school system. I have taught vocabulary, with marked success, to students of multiple skill levels and backgrounds.

Writing

As an English teacher at multiple grade levels, teaching students to improve their writing has been a top priority. I work with students from their current starting point, and help them build skills and confidence. I can help with writing a stronger thesis, organization, finding good supporting evidence, making writing more sophisticated, and more. I've also taught a college composition course, worked in a college writing center, and taught at a community college.
