About Jeanne

Currently I am a fourth grade humanities teacher, specializing in language arts and social studies. I have a B.A. in elementary education, a M.S. Ed. in Literacy K-12, and a Massachusetts professional teaching license for grades K-8. My twelve years of teaching experience include teaching kindergarten through eighth grade in parochial, public, and charter school settings. My passion and interests in teaching focus on reading and writing, and I like to convey this love of literacy to my students. As a tutor, I endeavor to get to know each child as an individual and to establish a positive relationship with him or her. Initially I assess, formally and informally, your child's interests, learning preferences, strengths, and non-strengths to better plan a course of study. We begin where your child is, and move forward to have learning be fun, supportive, and affirming. I will communicate with parents on a regular basis to keep them posted on their child's progress, and respond to any questions (preferably through email) within 24 hours. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and an M.S.Ed. in Literacy (K-12). I have taught grades K-8 for 12 years. I have a current Massachusetts Professional Teaching License (K-8).

Phonics

I have taught reading and writing for the past 12 years for grades K-8, and have an M.S.Ed. in Literacy (K-12). I recently passed the MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure) for Foundations of Reading.

Reading

I have taught elementary and middle school reading, with the greatest depth of experience for grades 3-5. I have a Master of Science in Education degree for Literacy K-12. My teaching of reading focuses on student choice, literary elements, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and the joy of reading.

Social Studies

I have taught social studies as a fourth grade humanities teacher for the past eight years, ranging from prehistoric man to ancient civlizations to United States geography. I am passionate about history and its need for a re-birth within the current educational culture of high-stakes testing. Understanding all aspects of history is a necessity to educate our future citizens.

Study Skills

As an elementary and middle school teacher, I have established and taught procedures and organizational tools to help students better learn and apply content area concepts. Different strategies work for different students. Finding a manageable approach for a particular student helps he or she to become a more independent and confident learner.
