About Marissa

I'm a 29-year-old former English teacher from New Hampshire who attended The University of New Hampshire with a major in English Teaching (grades 7-12). Though I no longer teach full-time, I have an affinity for literature, language, and sharing my skillset that I love to put to use!

I studied British and American literature of varying time periods (I even studied Romantic poetry in Cambridge, England for a summer!), grammar, and writing. I also studied educational psychology, teaching philosophy, and classroom management skills. I taught Junior English (primarily Early-Contemporary American Lit. sprinkled with grammar and vocabulary), Sophomore English (short stories, mixed poetry, writing process, Shakespeare, and, of course, grammar and vocabulary), and Philosophy (reading short philosophical pieces and responding with logical patterns of thought, how to think critically about a text and respond verbally as well as in writing, and how to respectfully oppose someone else's opinion). I'd like to share the skills I have in a personalized setting to help your student do the best they can in their English class!

I can assist your student through the writing process, help them with their reading comprehension, aid them in crafting their college essay, and work on time management strategies to optimize what they get out of their homework.

Meeting times are flexible, and I prefer it to be in a public place (a library, coffee shop, etc.) but I'm also open to doing lessons in the student's home. I also offer online lessons, as some folks prefer to have the option of not having to travel. I have a 4 hour cancellation policy, but the more advance notice I have, the better. I always appreciate constructive feedback, and welcome it often.

Additionally, I'm available for editing and proofreading projects aside from tutoring upon request.

Feel free to get in touch! I can't wait to hear from you and help your student achieve greater academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I took high-level grammar and writing courses in college and grad school, and I taught writing at the high school level.

Literature

I took many literature classes--Shakespeare, British and American Literatures in varying time periods, Contemporary, as well as several philosophy classes. I also taught all of these at the high school level.

Proofreading

Editing is one of my strongest assets. I have a strong command of English language and grammar and teaching writing has honed my proofreading skills greatly.

Reading

I'm an avid reader recreationally, and I have a background in literature and teaching fundamentals to students who are struggling with comprehension.

Vocabulary

I studied French and Latin for many years which has grown my vocabulary through learning etymologies and cognates. My teaching also dipped me into assisting students in using more interesting adjectives to make their writing more vivid in description.

Writing

My command of the English language is strong, and I write well. I've worked with middle and high schoolers as well as ESL adults to improve their writing and assist them with content, structure, and process.

Marissa is an awesome tutor!

She helped me in revising my essay and corrected all the Grammar errors I had and sentence structures. She is not only well-experienced, but also very friendly and cooperative. My essay, after the work she put in to it, is fantastic. Thank you Marissa.
