About John

As a multi-subject K-12 tutor with a background in special education, I have worked with students of all ages and ability levels, ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade. I have experience working with learning-disabled students, students with ADHD, and students with emotional or behavioral problems. I have worked at a high school level for the past 5 years and have assisted students in English, reading, math (algebra), writing (both academic essay writing and college essays), and history (all content areas). I am extremely comfortable working with students of any age and background. My methods involve breaking steps down into manageable chunks so that any task, no matter how big or small, can be accomplished. I am extremely friendly and patient and can make learning fun for all students. I am determined to see all students become successful and feel good about school. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

The students who I worked with at the high school level had multiple learning disabilities in addition to their ADD/ADHD. I also have a degree in Psychology and a Master's in Education. I am well trained on providing students with ADD/ADHD tasks that will help them focus and understand that frequent breaks are needed to ensure success.

Dyslexia

Many of the students I worked with struggled with dyslexia. I was able to identify their strengths and weaknesses in reading and provided them with techniques to assist them in reading. I also made strong use of audiobooks to reinforce reading comprehension.

Handwriting

I have excellent handwriting and have worked with students who cannot write legibly by providing tracing worksheets and writing aides such as pencil grips.

Softball

I coached freshman girls softball and junior varsity softball at the high school level.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher it was part of my job to teach students effective study strategies. Each day I would spend time reviewing strategies to make students better independent learners.
