Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

In my past experience working with individuals with ADD/ADHD, I see the importance of breaking things down into small and manageable steps whether that be a task or tutoring lesson. For example, instead of "go to the kitchen cupboard and on the second shelf there is a white mug with a red handle. Fill that mug with water and bring it to me", you would need to start out with:let's go to the kitchen together, then proceed to "let's open this cabinet, etc.

In addition, frequent breaks and shorter times of sitting and focusing will help, as will a room as free of background noise as possible (the library as opposed to the living room with your little brother watching TV).

I have a MA in counseling and have extensive ADHD/ADD experience, especially in youth development settings like outdoor education/school field trip programs as well as camps.

Elementary Math

I have strong math skills and believe in a hands on, experiential approach to learning that will make it fun.

Prealgebra

I have always been good at math and have tutored fellow classmates while in college. I have a strong pre-algebra background including variables, ratios/proportions, word problems, fractions, percentages, solving equations, etc.

Psychology

I earned my BA in '97 and my MA in 2000. My primary work after that has been with children. I have knowledge of most theories and paradigms of psychology.

Special Needs

I have worked with many special needs students in the home, school and community. I have helped students as young as 3 up through adult. I prefer tutoring in math and science as those were my strongest subjects in school as well as psychology and related social sciences, as that is what my degree is in. I am familiar with most learning disabilities as well as other special needs that may make learning difficult. I have worked with experiential and outdoor education programs for many years which take a different approach to learning, as well as having a strong background in inquiry-based learning (having the students ask questions and try to figure out the answer on their own while the instructor acts as a guide or facilitator in this process).

Statistics

I am primarily familiar with research methods for the social sciences and statistics for psychology.
