About Chad

I hope you're having a wonderful day. My days are spent exploring the culmination of human knowledge; so I'm always having a good day. I also get to ride my bicycle every day, so that keeps me happy. I also play music every day. Anyway, I brought up the bicycle because it does limit my travel radius. I regularly meet people at Boston, Watertown, and Cambridge Public Libraries. I am open to biking distances less than 10 miles from The Loading Dock in Belmont.

I have over 5 years of full-time tutoring experience. That experience was mostly in California at two places: a community college as a Supplemental Instructor and a private tutoring company where I focused on high-school chemistry, math, physics, and standardized tests (all sections). I have also taught all sections of the MCAT to multiple groups with a large tutoring company. In that time I have learned a ton, met many inspiring people, and generally had a great time.

Every student is different. I like to tailor my specific methods to each individual. However, my personality might not always be an appropriate fit. My philosophy is that whenever learning feels like a chore, or something that needs to just get done, the experience will be less effective. When I learn about a topic, I need to let myself investigate tangents that might not be immediately necessary; I like to meander a bit. Also, I am not an effective authoritarian figure. But, I love these topics and I love discussing them. I also have high expectations of my students.

I like tests. Standardized tests (like SAT, ACT, GRE, and MCAT) are very coachable. I enjoy teaching not only the content but also the strategies. Doing well on tests requires an interesting mix of confidence and humbleness. The confidence is needed to keep from freezing up, or freaking out, just because a question is a bit confusing. The humbleness is necessary to realize that sometimes it is best to make a best guess and move on; nobody knows everything and time is the game.

Aside from tutoring I like biking, gardening, writing, programming, animating, 3D modelling, playing sports (dodgeball, frisbee, and basketball), photographing wildlife, kayaking, and playing collaborative improvisational music.

Anyway, I look forward to meeting you. Let's prepare for that test or work on that homework.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have tutored Chemistry for over 5 years at both collegiate and secondary levels. I have a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a master's degree in chemical engineering. I spent a number of years as a Supplemental Instructor at a community college, where I helped students with various classes, but Chemistry was my specialty.

GRE

I have tutored students in standardized tests for over 5 years. The GRE is my favorite to teach. I especially enjoy the Verbal and Quantitative sections. When I took the GRE (in 2014) I scored 170 in math and 167 in verbal. Keep in mind I have spent a long time studying and teaching standardized tests; you can score high too with practice!

I particularly like the official material by ETS. I have copies that we can work through together.

MCAT

I took the MCAT and scored in the 99th percentile. I've taught all sections of the MCAT with a large company. I also have a lot of experience teaching Chemistry, Physics, Math, and standardized tests in general.

Precalculus

I have over 5 years experience teaching Precalculus. The fundamental concept of Precalculus is covariation of variables, an idea exemplified by function notation. This topic is explored through trigonometric functions, conic sections, rational functions, and exponential functions.

Python

As an engineer and hobbyist, I use Python just about every day. Python is my language of choice, but I've at times combined it with C, Fortran, and HTML. As a supplemental instructor at a community college, I worked in a tutoring center, where I would help students with a range of classes, including introductory programming - usually in Java or C++. Python is AWESOME!

SAT Math

I taught all sections of the SAT for about 5 years with a small tutoring company in California. In 2014 I moved to the area to pursue a graduate degree in Chemical Engineering. Now that classes are over, I have some spare time to return to tutoring.

SAT Reading

I taught all sections of the SAT for about 5 years with a small tutoring company in California.

SAT Writing

I taught all sections of the SAT for about 5 years with a small tutoring company in California.
