About Erika

For the past 5 years I have been tutoring as a volunteer and then as a private tutor. I have gained most of my experience from that, and have worked with many students between sixth grade through twelfth grade. Currently I am a rising sophomore at Endicott College in Beverly, MA, with a major in mathematics and a concentration in secondary education.

I plan on being a high school math teacher when I graduate school, but I enjoy working with students in younger grades as well. Even though my major is in math, I feel competent in tutoring English also. I am always proofreading my friends' essays and papers in college and have taken three college English courses as well as my required math and education courses.

As a student in college, I am required to take an internship each year of school in order to graduate. This year, my freshman year, I placed myself in a sixth grade classroom in a public school, which was the youngest age I would have been working with to date. While I was there I worked closely with students on their computation skills in math and was there for students as a resource during my three weeks in January. I am very familiar with what is expected in ranging classrooms and can be very flexible depending on what a teacher is looking for their students to learn.

I received excellence in geometry and algebra 2 while in high school and had taken algebra 1 a year earlier than other students in my grade. I enjoyed algebra and geometry very much and feel as though those are some of my strongest fields in math. Elementary math and prealgebra, I believe, will also be very fun subjects to teach and I have a lot of different strategies to use in these areas.

Since high school I have been proofreading people's papers and having increasingly done so now that I am in college. In high school we had set aside a class or two before each essay was due in order to peer review and proofread other student's papers in the classroom.

Please if you have any questions or would like to know more don't hesitate to contact me. I am very flexible with scheduling and would love to help in any way that I can.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In order for me to have taken Calculus II and soon Calculus III, I needed to take and understand Algebra I. Algebra I is the basis of all other math courses and without this crucial foundation it will be near impossible to continue on in math. I hope to guide students in the direction they need to go in to make them feel more confident in this subject and show them strategies on how to conquer this subject.

Elementary Math

When dealing with elementary math, the strategies are what will help the student fully understand what is going on when they are seated in class. I hope to further expand on already existing strategies and make the students feel more confident in their ability to learn such a difficult subject such as math without getting discouraged.

Geometry

I took Geometry my freshman year in high school and I will admit that it has been some time since I've used this topic. However, I had a 90 average or higher all four terms of that year and I know that if I saw the material once again I would take to it rather fast. I feel as though as long as I know ahead of time what particular topic(s) is(are) being covered, I could easily help with that.

Prealgebra

I have taken both Algebra I and II, and I have taken and will be taking several more math classes (as it is my major). The foundation of any math course is algebra, and what comes before algebra is prealgebra. I want to be able to guide students into the right direction when it comes to furthering their math careers, and tutoring prealgebra would be a very good place to start. It's the bridge between elementary math and secondary math.

Proofreading

I have been fortunate enough to graduate from a high school that has a very strong English department, and because of this I had been able to excel in my writing and reading skills through all four years. For each paper we wrote in high school, and continuously in college as well, we peer review each others papers before we go back and re-edit them. In college, I have taken an English class and a creative writing class. I have also proofread my friends papers outside of class time both in high school and college and I love to assist in grammar, spelling, and content areas that may need to be reworked.

Vocabulary

When I would study for my vocabulary tests, I had many different approaches as to how to study. My goal when tutoring this subject is to share those ideas with the student, as well as show them what they can do to improve on their vocabulary skills.
