I am currently enrolled in the Teacher Education and School Improvement program at UMASS Amherst. I am working towards a PhD. I have my Master's Degree in Special Education from Westfield State University. I hold an initial license in Moderate Disabilities PreK-8 and an initial license in English Language Learners K-12. I have always known I wanted to be a teacher, but thought I would test my other options while doing my undergraduate coursework. I graduated from UMASS Amherst with a BA in Communications. Ultimately, I was drawn back into the education field. I have 8 years of teaching experience in an ELL/Special Education setting.
Currently, I am working in Hampshire Regional Public Schools District as an ELL teacher for grades K-12. I work directly with students focusing on their English Communication skills and help to support their coursework in all subjects.
My last job was working in Springfield Public Schools as a 7th/8th Grade, Special Education, Student Support, teacher in a substantially separate program. I worked with at risk students with learning disabilities. I worked with a variety of students on IEPs, as well as, with behavioral difficulties. I taught their Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA and ELA Support Class (Read 180 and System 44 programs). I also wrote and implemented IEPs, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, and participate in Team Meetings.
I was previously working at a School in Chicopee, MA as a Special Education Teacher. Valley West School is a Chapter 766 state approved private day school designed to serve students who are experiencing social/emotional challenges and whose programming within a public school setting has been unsuccessful. I taught Kindergarten through 8th grade students in all core subjects, as well as, social skills. Some of the areas that I have experience working with are; students who suffer from depression, anxiety, limited social skills, tantrums, inappropriate attention seeking, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, poor attention, post traumatic stress, low self esteem, and poor academic motivation. I implemented their IEP's and participated in team meetings. I followed the Massachusetts Department of Education’s curriculum framework guides and come up with lessons to meet their standards as well as adapting the curriculum to fit my students' individual needs. I loved working with these students, and felt that my job was overall rewarding.
Before that, I worked as a special education paraprofessional in a resource room setting. I was hired as a 1:1, but I helped wherever the need is the greatest. I worked with Special Education Students grades 7-12, closely following their IEP's, each one individually, while following their schedules and providing extra help in their core subjects. Also, I assisted in teaching their Math class.
While working for Corporation for Public Management, I was teaching the GED material to pregnant and parenting teenagers, ages 14-21, covering all subject matters on the 8th and 9th grade level. I also had experience with higher and lower level educated students. This experience was one of the most rewarding of my life. Additionally, I did various types of case management with individual students.
I also had the opportunity to work with children with special needs, specifically children with autism, while working as a 1:1 Aide at a summer camp. I truly enjoyed this experience and found it, overall, rewarding. The children I worked with varied in age and disability. In addition, I helped with the daily routines and in the planning of activities and field trips.
Additionally, I read, write and speak basic Spanish. I completed coursework in Spanish as an Undergraduate.
