About Mike

Hi Wyzant community! I am an MFA candidate in creative writing at UMass Amherst. I also teach College Writing and Reading Fiction for the college. To make things easier for you, I'll provide my qualifications in list form:

Three years of experience teaching writing and English on the college level.

Five years of experience as a private writing and reading tutor for all skill levels. I have worked with high school students as well as Phd. Candidates.

Experience as a Placement Test Reader, evaluating students' essays for their placement in university level writing courses.

High scorer in the GRE and SAT verbal and writing sections.

Published writer with a deep understanding of syntax, grammar and effective style.

Experience with ESL candidates, especially those on the university level.

Very, very patient and invested in your learning.

My method involves looking at specificity and organization to improve essays and applications. I use both online tools like track changes, as well as hard copy editing to make extensive notes over which we then discuss. For reading comprehension, I use a question-based (almost Socratic) method to alleviate confusion. I assign corresponding vocabulary lists and provide pneumonic and etymological tips to help students remember certain terms. I am all about using patience and practice to make skills and ideas second nature and I do not believe in overwhelming people with unnecessary jargon or busy work.

I love teaching and writing, but I'm aware of how challenging these subjects can be, especially when you are under constant pressure to perform and apply to colleges and jobs. My hope is help people by calmly providing the information and practice necessary to develop strong, fundamental writing skills. I look forward to hearing from and working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

I am qualified to teach study skills because, as a Teaching Associate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I spend many of my office hours helping students with time management, as well as providing them with resources to make their study sessions more productive. Specifically, I meet with students and ask them questions to determine what kind of learner they are, be it visual, auditory, tactile etc. I also try to learn about the student's interests and self-identified strengths. With this information I work with the student to re-envision the study material in a more palatable way. For example, when I tutor students on essay writing, I have them identify blogs, shows or websites they find particularly interesting. We then revise the essay as though we were going to include it in said blog, show, website. This method gives students a more definitive and appealing goal, showing them the relevance of their coursework and how, whether they realize it or not, it is already in conversation with the world around them.

I also have experience tutoring ESL PHD candidates, helping them become more comfortable with advanced and informal English. In these cases I like to speak with the student, while simultaneously having him or her write and revise. I have the candidates read their work out loud while typing so that they can better internalize the new phrases and grammatical constructions they're learning. The last candidate with whom I worked made noticeable strides in his speech over a three day span of time. The dissertation that he revised using these skills earned both he and myself high praise from his department.

Writing

I am a published and fellowship-winning writer. My work has appeared in Jersey Devil Press, and has earned me the $10,000 University of Massachusetts Diversity Fellowship.

I have three years of experience teaching on the college level and have advanced my professional skills through several committees that have focused on the issues of teaching with technology and developing curriculums for writing based classes.

Lastly I have experience tutoring on a wide variety of skill levels. Most recently I have proofread and tutored Phd. candidates at UMass Amherst, for writing style and grammar.
