I have been teaching academic reading and study skills, writing, and SAT prep courses for 27 years. Among the more than thirty colleges at which I have taught study skills are Amherst, Williams, Bucknell University, and the United States Naval Academy.
My teaching has always emphasized a simple rule: if you know how a piece of writing was construced by the author, you will know how to reverse the process to take it apart and find its essential meaning. If you know how a test is constructed and what its creators are looking for, you will know where to find the answers and how to avoid the errors. I can show you methods to do this in a way that will go beyond any particular test and be applicable to other academic work, and even "real life." I cannot guarantee taking a test will actually be fun, although that is possible, but it will cease to be intimidating!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The SAT reading test looks for a student's ability to find the argument level of comprehension and filter out the wrong answers that wander away from the argument or lure students into fixating on the secondary detail level, which the test does not focus upon. My lessons teach students where to find the argument, and therefore how to avoid the pitfalls. In the process, students will learn how to go through each reading much more rapidly, and therefore answer more questions in the time available. This process can also be adapted to reading actual homework assignment faster and more effectively, and can result in better grades on the transcript that will be submitted to colleges!
