In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach middle school English (grades 5-8), and I have worked with students in a therapeutic school setting whose academic instructional levels varied from emergent reader to above grade level. I am able to work with students across a variety of instructional levels and academic abilities.
I am certified to teach English for grades 5 through 12. I have worked with students in various academic success programs, both here and in Maine, helping them improve their academic and organizational skills.
I am certified to teach special needs (mild to moderate disabilities) for grades 5-12, and include study and organizational skills in my classes regularly. My current school has daily intervention sessions, which focus on teaching and improving these skills by using agendas, graphic organizers, and other tools. In addition, I have worked with special needs students for almost 10 years in a variety of settings and situations, with study skills a component of every program. For example, I teach students how to scan a text for important information, how to highlight necessary details, how to create outlines, and how to effectively take notes.
