About Bridget

I'm Bridget F., an experienced teacher/tutor with a passion for teaching and learning. I have been in the classroom for over 13 years and tutoring for even longer. I have had great success with my students both inside and outside of the classroom. My students have ranged from kindergarten students learning to read, write, count and sort, to middle school students learning to study and apply skills they are learning, to college students working through exams and thesis papers.

While tutoring, I am able to tailor my instruction to the student in front of me. I can meet his/her needs and provide activities and situations to increase not only their subject knowledge, but also their confidence as a learner. My responsibility as a teacher is to facilitate learning within a positive environment and encourage each student’s progress.

I am a certified teacher K-6 and in Middle School English, Math, and History. I currently teach 5th grade ELA (reading, writing) as well as Social Studies.

Please contact me about any questions you may have! I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a certified classroom teacher for 13 years and a tutor for significantly longer, I've encountered many students with ADD/ADHD and had the opportunity to participate in professional development to specifically develop strategies to help students with ADD/ADHD. I am very willing to try multiple strategies, listen to my students (and their parents), chunk material, and provide a hands on (and sometimes physically active) approach to learning.

Common Core

Within the last few years, I've taught at a school that has undergone a complete transformation from the MA State Curriculum Standards to the Common Core. I have rewritten curriculum to match the new Core standards and have revamped much of what I've been teaching. I also have done considerable research on the mindset behind the Core and it's progression through the grades. I've added new techniques and depth to my teaching and tutoring.

Dyslexia

One of my first teaching positions was at a school specifically for dyslexic learners (Linden Hill School in Northfield, MA). While there, I participated in trainings specific to teaching dyslexic students and taught reading and writing classes. Students with dyslexia often find school challenging and need increased confidence to build on what they already know, thus making it extremely important to set realistic goals and celebrate gains.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified by the state of Massachusetts to teach Elementary grades. I have over ten years of teaching experience at this level as well. Currently, I teach 5th grade. Previously, I have also tutored at the elementary level.

Handwriting

Although handwriting seems to have been left behind in favor of typing, I was on the handwriting committee for several years where I teach. I believe that handwriting will always be a way of expressing yourself and is a step in learning how to read various forms of print as well as script. I have tutored elementary students in handwriting (OT); both print and cursive.

Sewing

I began sewing when I was in elementary school and haven't stopped! In high school, I won an award for my sewing skills and began costuming for theater productions (several of my designs also won awards at state and regional levels). Currently, I sew as a hobby - clothing, costumes, and quilts mostly although I have also made curtains and other around the home items for friends, family, and myself.

Social Studies

I hold a Middle School Humanities certification (English Language Arts and History). Additionally, I currently teach Social Studies to over 50 fifth graders daily. I find that an understanding of the world and its history plays a tendentious role in our understanding of ourselves and our society. Within Social Studies, students also often learn study skill and gain more of an understanding of themselves as students.

Special Needs

As an inclusion teacher for the past thirteen years, I have a great deal of experience with special needs learners. I have worked with special educators to facilitate and differentiate learning activities and enjoy getting to know children of all abilities and disabilities. Additionally, when working with a student, no matter their needs, I work to set goals with them to further their learning. I can meet students where they are academically and socially to help them grow in their subject knowledge and in their confidence.

Study Skills

As an elementary school teacher, I find that students need to be taught to study. While this is a habit of a good learner and a strong student, for many it does not come naturally. Within the structure of the school day, I make time to talk about and develop study skills. I have previously tutored academic subjects while focusing on study skills as well. I find that, once learned and applied regularly, study skills allow students to make progress in all academic areas.
