About Melissa

I am very interested in a position in tutoring. I am confident my experience, combined with a real passion and enthusiasm for educating elementary age students would enable me to make a very positive contribution to your child's education.

I have enjoyed a varied and progressively successful career during which I have gained in-depth experience in teaching, tutoring and project coordination. My areas of specialization include both Literacy and Assessment. I also have a background in ESL through pursuit of a Master's in Applied Linguistics at UMASS Boston. I have practical knowledge and understanding of educational issues, especially with regard to Second Language learners, and equal opportunities.

As teacher, curriculum leader, and tutor, I work within a multi-cultural school contributing both educationally and professionally to the development of students and staff. As teacher and tutor in Boston Public Schools, I have successfully raised reading results in first grade for over ten years. I have also lead teams of teachers as Literacy Lead Teacher and Instructional Facilitator for the school.

My tutoring and teaching experiences have enabled me to assist students in raising academic achievement as well as individual performance results on MCAS tests across grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 in both Math and Literacy. I would welcome the opportunity to raise levels of academic performance through engaging the minds of tutored students while working with WyzAnt.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed teacher of 10 years with elementary aged students in Boston Public Schools. I have also taught ages 7-12 in England for over eight years.

I am a certified Elementary Grade K-5 ESL Teacher including an endorsement to teach Sheltered English Immersion classes.

I am a certified Elementary Grade 1-6 General Education Teacher of Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies and Science.

I am a long time tutor of after school, vacation and test prep programs with a strong background for accelerating progress in students of all ages, including adults.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Masters Degree in Applied Linguistics from UMASS Boston. I teach ESL in elementary schools and work quite closely with parents and families developing English as a Second Language. I also passed the State's MTEL test as part of the ELL certification process.

My other Masters Degree in Education is by way of Manchester Metropolitan University in England. I also graduated with a Communication and Media Degree from Rhode Island College. This degree in particular, is relevant to understanding what it takes to be literate in a first or second language. Having studied Spanish and Urdu also, I can appreciate the difficulties of learning to feel confident with coherently speaking, reading or writing in any language!

Phonics

I have successfully raised levels of 1st Grade Reading achievement for over 10 years working within Boston Public Schools. I have tutored kindergarten, and first through third grade students in extended learning, summer school and afterschool programs for over twenty years.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Communications and Media from Rhode Island College. I also have two Master's degrees; one in Education and the other in Applied Linguistics (ESL).

I have experience with Public Speaking as a teacher, professor and student. I have facilitated public speaking events for teachers and understand well the need for oratory to be well structured, well-paced, contextualized and engaging.

Reading

As teacher, Literacy curriculum leader, and tutor, I work within a multi-cultural school contributing both educationally and professionally to the development of students and staff. As teacher and tutor in Boston Public Schools, I have successfully raised reading results across grade levels in our fourth Grade Acceleration Academy during February Breaks in 2013 and 2014. I have also lead teams of teachers as an Instructional Facilitator for the school.

My tutoring and teaching experiences have enabled me to assist students in raising academic achievement as well as individual performance results on MCAS tests across grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 in both Math and Literacy. I would welcome the opportunity to raise levels of academic performance through engaging with you.

Study Skills

In my role as tutor, I have achieved much success in building student study habits in reading, writing, mathematics and science for over ten years.

As a Coordinator of a Program at a Community College for MCAS prep classes, I have succeeded with assisting many of my students struggling with academic content, self confidence, managing family life, school and work, go on to become successful in careers in management.

I have tutored younger children both one-to-one, and in small group contexts devising accelerated learning and/or support for students, assisting them with mastery of study habits across subjects and grade levels.

I have enjoyed a varied and progressively successful career during which I have gained in-depth experience in teaching, tutoring and project coordination. Using my skills in assessing students, I have met with great successes when working with many students and adults who struggled with self discipline, academic schedules, study habits and critical thinking skills.

I have practical knowledge and understanding of educational issues, especially with regard to Second Language learners, and equal opportunities.

As a former student of two Masters Degree with full time teaching positions, I am confidently able to juggle projects simultaneously, and thus able to assist all types of students with identifying and utilizing study skills to achieve mastery in academic subjects.
