About Stephanie

Welcome to my profile!

I have been tutoring students since I was a student myself many years ago. I absolutely love learning and sharing my knowledge with my students.

In addition to an MBA, I have a degree in Art History and managed a tutoring business for many years. During that time, I met hundreds of students (several of whom I tutored myself) and was introduced to a variety of learning styles and personalities. I'm able to use those experiences to help me customize my teaching style to the needs of each individual student, helping him/her get the most out of our time together.

I particularly enjoy working with students in grades 4-8 in Reading/English Language Arts and Math, although I am happy to work with children of all ages. I cover all areas of elementary and middle school curriculum, as well as most high school level subjects. I also help with organization, time management, and study skills as I am a firm believer that those are just as critical to academic success as the subject matter itself.

I absolutely adore children and love watching them grow and progress academically. My teaching style not only includes academics, but also the life lessons and positive reinforcement that motivate and improve self-esteem.

I have seen numerous students over the years go from elementary school to college. To me, there is nothing better than watching a student blossom right before my eyes!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

To me, Algebra 1 is a great way to introduce students to the beauty of higher-level math and explore the myriad of ways in which one problem can be solved. I find it very exciting when a student and I solve the same problem using our own techniques and then discuss the various routes we took to get the answer.

From graphing linear equations to solving for absolute value, I will be there to help your student every step of the way. I take the time to explain how and WHY certain steps are taken to solve problems, so students understand and become comfortable working with the fundamental principles needed on their math journey.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am extremely qualified to teach students at the elementary level. For the past 20 years, I have taught students of all ages, including those in grades K-6, and I am very passionate about my work. I also have an MBA and ran a tutoring company for 7 years. In addition to those fundamental elements, I am well-versed in the MA curriculum frameworks, and I am confident teaching any subject from reading comprehension to geometry to social studies (and everything else in between). My teaching style is very grounded and "common-sensical." For example, if I am teaching a kindergartener how to read, I might make up flash cards of individual letters and put them together to make basic words. That way, the student can manipulate the letters him/herself and clearly see how letters come together to form words. From there, we can then work on blending sounds to make recognizable words. As another example, at the higher end of elementary education, I could help a 5th grader solve word problems by extracting(and underlining) key pieces of information from the problem itself, identify which mathematical methods are needed to solve the problem and then work through the math to get to the solution itself. My experiences and expertise go on and on, especially since I adjust my teaching strategies per the need(s) of each student.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is a blast, and I love teaching it to students. I have worked with students as young as kindergarten who are just getting introduced to numbers and fundamental math concepts all the way up through the higher elementary grade levels where students are learning more advanced concepts such as adding/multiplying with fractions and solving basic equations.

I always teach with color, as I find that color-coordinating key steps helps students see and understand why and how problems are solved.

For the more kinesthetic learners, I bring tangible objects that they can use and manipulate, further enhancing their understanding of the problems at hand. For students who process information auditorially, I (or the student) will read the problems out loud.

Geography

It is true that the world is becoming a smaller, more intimate place. Classrooms are now filled with students from around the globe, technology makes world-wide communication a breeze and travel to even the most remote parts of the world are possible.

Because of this, I believe it is very important that students know their geography. In this ever-changing world, students need to know where they live, where they come from and where/how the rest of the world lives.

I use my own love of travel, combined with my experiences from living abroad, to help students look at the world at a tangible level. This can be done by looking at a globe, reviewing specific countries online or coloring maps of certain geographic locations.

I also help students understand the cultures and languages behind the geography as well. That way, they will gain a deeper understanding for each locale they study and find a connection to that place that they will remember for a long time.

Let me help your student learn geography today!

Study Skills

As an MBA, a private tutor for ~20 years and a manager who ran a large tutoring company, I am well-qualified to tutor study skills. I customize study skills to each individual student with whom I work. For example, for a younger student who may be more of a visual learner, I would have him/her draw images pertaining to the subject at hand and organize them in a way that facilitates their study. Colors and shapes are important here, as they help the student sort the images into different categories, based on the assignment at hand. For students with ADHD, as another example, I have had great success having them make flash cards and placing them throughout the room in which the session takes place (this works best for in-home sessions). This way, they have the freedom to move about to gather the cards, while reviewing key concepts and organizing their thoughts. Lastly, for older students who might already have good study skills, I will help them develop those even further. We could work on concepts such as time management (especially for large assignments such as research projects that require a good deal of planning), test prep (such as grouping concepts together, using acronyms when needed, or even trying some memorization techniques) and homework. In summary, there are a myriad of ways in which I teach study skills to my students. Since each student is unique, I use my creativity to help my students develop study skills that work for them. I consider myself to be extremely well-qualified in this area.

Vocabulary

Words are amazing--they can empower us to clearly state what is on our minds, help us to understand one another and allow us to articulate concepts in a variety of ways.

Because of this, I believe that having a strong vocabulary is critical. It is my duty as a tutor to ensure that students receive the skills they need to build their vocabulary, from the early elementary students who are learning sight words to the high school students who are writing term papers and preparing for college.

I teach vocabulary in a many ways, making it fun (AND INTERESTING) for students. This could range from playing vocabulary board games to solving challenging crossword puzzles to highlighting new words from reading passages and then looking them up in a dictionary.

I enjoy passing my love of words onto my students, so they, too, can discover the many benefits of having a strong vocabulary!
