About Jessica

English was always my best subject in school: I was quick to learn all the ins-and-outs of essay-writing, I read the books I was supposed to for class, and I think, even as I initially entered college to study Psychology, the idea of teaching writing and reading and literature was always on the back burner.

As of now, I have about a decade of teaching experience under my belt. I began observing in middle school and high school environments, which led to completing a three-month practicum at a Catholic high school. The difference between some of the lower-income schools I spent time in and the affluent nature of the one where I completed my student teaching requirement for my first Master's degree was an eye-opener. Embracing diversity within the educational field has been an ongoing appeal for me ever since.

Once I was vetted, so to speak, I spent the longest chunk of time working at the college level with non-native English speakers. At one school, students worked to improve their academic English skills (reading, writing, phonetics, speech, culture, listening) with the intent (usually) of proceeding with for-credit courses later on. Many of these students had immigrated to the United States and had spent months/years using survival English. Several of them were refugees, and many had left families behind in places like Congo and Sudan for such an opportunity. At another institution, I worked largely with Japanese and Chinese exchange students to bulk up their knowledge of American culture and English essay-writing. Once again, the differences between these two seemingly similar groups was vast.

Other educational endeavors have filled various pockets of my time over the years, as well. I spent a semester tutoring elementary-aged students in Common Core reading and math. I have volunteered in a number of places, including at my local library, where I often signed up to work with kids on arts and crafts activities, or to work the charmingly anachronistic photo booth at the annual renaissance festival. I proofread and copy-edited for a college newspaper (a follow-up to writing for my alma mater's own paper), and worked with LGBT youth as a faculty coordinator for several years. Even when my work experience consisted primarily of retail and customer service gigs, I was always drawn to opportunities to help train and educate people. I believe everyone can learn with a set of tools catered to them and a willingness to try. I will personally never stop trying to learn new things, and, hopefully, I will also never stop teaching.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
