##### About Prabir

I have a vast range of experience and education supporting my extensive skill sets in math. I have been teaching math-intensive engineering courses at the university level for decades. Additionally, during the last decade, I have been teaching math at middle and high school levels.

My extensive academic records (BS and MS from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur; PhD from University of California, Davis; and Post Doctoral research at Clemson University) together with real-world experience as a design engineer, a research engineer, an IT specialist, and a university professor give me the confidence and belief to guide school children in reaching the heights of their math capabilities.

While tutoring students, I have noticed many do not bother about knowing why's (concepts) as they almost always are more interested in how's (the steps). This is one reason why most students struggle to apply their math knowledge.

By teaching math from a different perspective, I have found a successful approach. Instead of remembering formulas, say for circumference, I explain the definition of “pi” to my students and show them how the formula for circumference is derived from it. I prefer them knowing where such rules, concepts and applications come from. This kind of exposure really empowers them.

My tutoring style deals with such empowerment, hence making the students their own teachers. As an example, instead of factoring a quadratic equation by trial and error or an instinctive method, which can fail and waste time, I explain a sure shot way to solve/factorize it by comparing the particular quadratic with the general QE to find coefficients a, b, and c. This sure shot method will readily detect when the middle coefficient is not produced by any arithmetic manipulation.

As a bonus, knowing a sure shot method, by eliminating the mystery out of the equation, gives students a lot more confidence than doing purely by instincts. It also makes them feel better than doing something with a lot of questions unanswered. Being inspired by my success in the classroom, I am carefully writing a math reference book to capture these ideas and approaches. My other books include (i) Applied Numerical Methods for Food and Agricultural Engineers. 1994. Published by CRC Press, Inc. (ISBN: 0-8493-2454-8), and (ii) FORTRAN Estruturado. 1996. (In Portuguese). Published by the local university press (Universidade Federal de Lavras), Brazil.

The patience to listen to my students, understand their difficulties, and clarify them by using examples which are easy to comprehend has given me the confidence to be successful with them and bring them success. I go back to the root of the difficulty and start building concepts so the student not only solves the problem at hand, but also feels confident solving different problems.

Helping students, who never thought they could learn math concepts, to become independent learners and handle math problems beyond their wildest dreams has been my biggest reward.

My hobbies include writing, sketching, driving, playing badminton, developing (i) computer applications with Visual Basic, (ii) GeoGebra applets, and (iii) cooking products to help non-cooks and people who do not know the fundamentals of cooking in preparing authentic international dishes on the fly.

I am easy-going, enthusiastic, and cheerful even during stressful times.

Teaching Portuguese:

Framingham, Marlborough and some areas around Ashland have many Brazilians and we need to deal with them on a regular basis. What is better than do it in their native language, Portuguese to know and understand them better as persons, have social interaction, do business with them, and reap other benefits of knowing a second language such as boosting memory, improving listening skills, enriching the first language, feeling smarter and so on?

Living in Brazil with my family for 12 years, and as Professor of Food Engineering, I taught in an elite Brazilian university in Portuguese language. Only a handful of my colleagues could speak in English but the same was not the case with students. Most students couldn’t even understand spoken English at all. So, it was kind of question of survival to be able to communicate in Portuguese.

All in my family learned to read, write, and speak Portuguese fluently. During our stay in Brazil I wrote a book on FORTRAN language in Portuguese and the local university press published it. As a Portuguese teacher, I am sure I will receive a lot of attention from the elite societies as well as down to earth people who would like to hone their second language skills in Portuguese.
