I am a Japanese native speaker who has a deep interest in helping students learn Japanese and learn how to be successful in Japanese society. I lived in Japan until this past year and worked as a civil servant for seven years. During that time, I helped JET Program workers from America learn how to talk with their bosses and co-workers. This means I can help you learn smooth business Japanese as well as more casual language. In Japan and in the US, I frequently advise LGBTQ students and students of color about Japanese culture and how to adjust to Japanese society. Both Japanese language and culture can be tough--but I will work with you to help you succeed and achieve your goals!

My favorite aspect of tutoring is tailoring my lessons to YOUR needs and desires. If you would like anime, but need more speaking practice, I can come up with role-play situations that will allow you to talk about your interests. If you like Japanese culture and want to read more high-level texts, we can work together to read simple newspaper articles from NHK or simple books about Japanese history. We can work together to help you work on your weak points while also speaking to your passions!

This past semester, I worked as a Japanese language teaching assistant at Harvard University. While I was not teaching at the head of classrooms, I did helped professors create future Japanese courses. I also was the volunteer instructor for the Japanese Language Soirée at the Japan Society of Boston from 2017 through the spring of 2018. I created interactive lesson plans that taught students about Japanese culture, and worked with beginning to advanced students. I also worked in Japan with a NPO called Seika Global Net to teach Japanese to adults from other countries who were living in Japan.

If you love the language, but worry about how you'll fit into Japanese culture; if you love Japanese culture, but you don't know how to start learning the language--reach out to me! Together we can make sure that you succeed and achieve your goals.

Engaging Tutor!

My 14-year old girls had their very first Japanese lesson with Aki and they were hooked right away! Really appreciate Aki sharing her talent with our daughters.

Difficult Article

We read together a difficult article that I had been having trouble with on my own and it turned out part of the problem was the Kansai dialect which I didn't even know existed. Aki was great with explaining it though!

Blessed to have found Aki

Aki has had several sessions with our son. Out of all the tutors and teachers that he has had in his life Aki has been the best. She has done an amazing job building his confidence. When he is in session I can hear him laughing and when he is done he is so excited for the next session. I would highly recommend her. Thank you Aki for everything you do!

News Article

Today we did a news article which was targeted just above me level. The vocab was all new but I knew most of the grammar so she gave me some questions and we went over everything. It was great!

Natural Approach

As we move along and complete something, she's letting me pick the next topic which helps for a natural approach to learning.

Lessons going great!

Lessons are going great! I do a little no pressure homework in between and then we spend some time going over it and each time I learn a ton! It's great!

Writing

I wrote a movie description in Japanese and was very worried because I thought it would be near unreadable but we went through it together and I learned a ton!

Causitive-Passive

This is pretty complicated! It's helpful that Aki Sensei can explain in Japanese and English so that once I understand I can confirm again

Solid

This is making me feel better that questions I have are not simple but actually hard and I wouldn't be able to figure out without help.
