About Katharyn

Hi there! I recently finished my doctorate in chemistry and am excited about teaching science and German. Chemistry was my least favorite subject in high school, but I loved it in college. It's amazing what a difference a good teacher can make, and I hope to make this difference for students I tutor.

I have a strong background as a teaching assistant for college-level math courses (calculus and linear algebra), and I was a teaching assistant for chemistry labs at Mount Holyoke. Beyond that, I was a private English tutor for a German student during my Junior Year Abroad in Hamburg, Germany.

Having studied at multiple institutions in Germany and the US, I've seen the best of both academic cultures and am passionate about combining the best of both worlds. I want to see students succeed, and am convinced that combining these two cultures provides an important edge in an ever more competitive and international world.

From 2011-2014, I was a teaching assistant at Heidelberg University. Here, I led weekly small group sessions for calculus and linear algebra courses geared towards chemistry and geology majors.
My responsibilities included: led peer-presentation sessions; graded homework sets; reinforced and deepened understanding of material with short lectures and additional practice problems; supported students with additional instruction as needed.

From 2006-2008, I was a teaching assistant for General Chemistry I Laboratory (2006), General Chemistry II Laboratory (2007), and Organic Chemistry I Laboratory (2008).
My responsibilities included: guided experiments; assisted students with proper laboratory techniques; worked with students to connect laboratory work with lecture material; helped ensure laboratory safety.

I double majored in Chemistry and German Studies in college, and my graduate program in chemistry was conducted in German. I speak German with near-native fluency (my students in Heidelberg didn't know I was not German!). However, I also know what it is like to learn German- I didn't start until I was at Mount Holyoke!

I want to make science and math fun and not intimidating. Students often get stuck by their own insecurities in these areas, and it can hold back even the brightest kids! My goal is to create a fun but rigorous learning environment tailored to meet your specific needs as the student.

When I'm not tutoring, my hobbies are reading (Donna Tartt is my favorite author), running (1/2 marathon), and yoga (the hotter the better!). I love to learn new languages, and currently I'm learning French!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I hold a Dr. rer. nat. (PhD), an MSc, and an AB in chemistry. As an undergraduate, I was a teaching assistant for General and Organic Chemistry lab courses at Mount Holyoke College. My research background in chemistry includes both computational work with organic photochemistry and ceramics, as well as experimental work in nanoscience.

Organic Chemistry

The main subject of my PhD was computational organic photochemistry. I completed all courses in organic chemistry required for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and my second examiner for my dissertation was an organic chemist.

Writing

I have extensive writing experience in multiple fields. My undergraduate degree is from a liberal arts college, where writing is a major focus. I've also written countless lab reports, a bachelor's theses, a master's thesis, and a doctoral dissertation. Much of my scientific work is published in peer-reviewed journals.
