About Eric

I am an experienced English as a Second Language teacher with a CELTA certificate in ESL teaching (administered by Cambridge University) and a Masters in English Literature from the University of Virginia. I have been teaching English as a Second Language for about 20 years now, off and on, in schools and privately. I have taught in Boston, New York, and San Paulo, Brazil.

I can also speak French, Italian, some Spanish, and some Chinese. I have studied Latin, Greek, and Old English as well, so I know a lot about grammar and am aware of how difficult learning a foreign language is. I have taught students from all over the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and teach most of my classes either through Skype, or in Harvard Square.

I can also teach SAT and GRE test preparation (reading and writing) as well as help students write papers for school. I am an experienced copyeditor, and have edited documents for presentation at official UN meetings, articles for journals, and business flyers.

I am an excellent tutor because I have two decades of experience, certificates in both ESL and copyediting, and both a Bachelor's (summa cum laude) and Masters in English Literature. I received a 1420 in the SAT (1600 being the highest), a 670 in the English reading comprehension GRE and a 6/6 in the writing section.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to take classes with me. I live in Arlington, Massachusetts, but teach several people in Asia by Skype and also teach students in Harvard Square or nearby in Cambridge.

Thank you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
