THESIS Tutoring and Support - with MSc and PhD in psych, a classical education from a Quaker school, and a lifetime of research in business, health care, and the arts, I can help you with everything from grammar to writing a thesis up to PhD level. I've worked online with BSc, MSc and PhD students in the UK, in South Africa and here in the states - I'm a discerning guide. I can help you unpick what your professors are asking you to do, let go of anxieties (as I am a relaxation therapist, too), and manage the creative thinking and writing processes so that you gather your wits about you, remain focused, and view your assignments in a series of very manageable pieces of work you can finish to a good standard.
ART - I've been an artist all my life, have been trained at Montgomery College in Maryland, at The Slade School in London, England, and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I have raised money for arts projects involving the community - especially enjoy working with teens, and have worked with visually impaired and blind artists, too. I follow New York State's guidance for high school students, and am happy to help you develop your own unique body of work, your portfolio for taking to high school and college applications. I work in multiple media - glass, printmaking, textile, paint, and paper and pencil. I am happy to work with up to four students at a time, and in this case the first student is $60/hr and further students are $30/hour.
I earned a BA in English long ago, along with a minor in Philosophy. I've written and published poetry, written and published academic articles for peer review journals, worked in business and produced slide shows and reports for this unique audience (as I have an MBA, and worked in high tech for many years) and taught seminars college and university levels. I've recently completed a PhD in Psychology by research. I've edited complex chapters and papers written by non-native-English speakers. I've assisted with TESOL lessons in Glasgow Scotland and enjoyed every minute of it.
I hold an Honors AA in Studio Arts and my work is held by people from New York, England, Scotland and South Africa. It's my goal to individualize your tutoring sessions based on the work you've done to date and on your own mission for learning. I give you guidance and homework which stretch your imagination and your creativity. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned an Honors AA in Studio Arts at Montgomery College and studied at The Slade School in London and at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I have continued my arts education at Essex Center for the Arts in Lawrence. I am an active member of Arts League Lowell. My work is owned by people in New York, the UK, South Africa and other parts of Europe. I have tutored adolescents in art with a view to developing a portfolio for submission to schools like Phillips Academy in Andover. I have worked with adolescents on a number of projects which I developed and for which I obtained funding. I use the New York State curriculum for the arts with my students, I assign them homework including but not limited to design, colour, drawing, community resources, arts history, and contemporary artists.
I hold an Honors MBA from Boston University, with a specialism in Health Care Management. Post MBA, I spent many years in corporate Public Relations in high tech. I was liaison to industry analysts and was the solo market research manager for the US software products business. I have managed demand supply balancing projects and worked on business process re-engineering contracts where customer facing issues prove to be of paramount importance. I have worked in research for many years, not only in for profit business but also in non-profit and the arts. I am comfortable working at high school and college level in this subject area. I particularly enjoy helping students understand what their professors are asking them for in complex assignments, and breaking this down into manageable pieces so that the assignments are completed on time and to a high standard.
I learned painting at Montgomery, The Slade in London, and The MFA in Boston. I have taught adolescents and adults in acrylic, oil and watercolour. My preferred medium at this time is acrylic. I a fully able to teach students how to work archivally from the start, including how to make their own supports using glue size, linen, and boards. My work ranges from representational to abstract, and often includes multiple media. I enjoy sewing into my work by hand and including beads, metals, wood and other found objects. I often use techniques which are also appropriate to printmaking (another medium I enjoy and can teach). In other words, I am comfortable with any student's process and encourage creativity and personal exploration as much as possible.
