I am currently a part-time Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education student at Boston University. I recently passed a doctoral level music theory exam and am finishing my dissertation proposal. I have 25+ years of teaching general music and choral music in public and private schools as well as private piano and guitar lessons to students of all ages. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach ear training for several reasons. As an undergraduate student I took ear training courses and passed ear training exams in order to get accepted into the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University (not an easy school to get accepted into). I also teach ear training with all of my students (piano, guitar and voice) because it is necessary for all musicians (young, old, amateur and professional) to have a developed ear for listening to music.
I have been playing the guitar for over 30 years. It is not my main instrument, but I use it in the classroom to accompany students when they sing. I also have a guitar unit for middle school where I teach students to read open chord diagrams, play melodies and to play in an ensemble setting. I also have a guitar club after school.
Over the years, I have taken several music history courses from general (Medieval, Renaissance, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century) to specific courses such as Mozart, Beethoven, The Russian Five Composers, Bach and their works. Recently I passed a musicology exam as part of the requirement for my doctoral work for which I examined an area of music history much more in depth.
I have been playing the piano for 30+ years. As an undergrad student majoring in Music Education, the piano was my major instrument of study. I have been teaching private piano lessons for 25 years. As a music teacher in private and public schools over the years I have been an accompanist for numerous shows and choral concerts. I have also worked as a rehearsal pianist for community theaters.
