About Peter

School is tough for everyone. We all have our struggles, whether it's math, science, reading, or just maintaining your focus. I was reminded of this recently when I was tutoring a 12-year-old with hearing and learning issues. He's extremely bright but he's easily distracted, especially by his devilish little sister. She loves to tease, goad, and make silly noises just to annoy him. He wants to do his work but she's the impediment. So he says.

We discussed this and I mentioned that not every learning environment is ideal. But rather than lecture him, I told a story about musicians in the early part of the last century (he's a music lover so I thought he'd relate). The story goes that in the 1920s many of the best songwriters were employed by music publishers and their continued employment depended on whether their songs were popular. Most of them couldn't afford a piano so they had to work "on-site" which meant they had to work in a room with a dozen piano players all trying to compose music at the same time. Talk about concentration!

Once I told him this story, I could see his tension disappear. I mention this story because I like to think of myself as a tutor but also a problem-solver -- someone who's always seeking new resources, information, and texts. Or if need be, telling a story from 100 years ago.

A little bit about me: For over 20 years I was a professional writer who wrote for a variety of formats, media, and audiences. I switched careers in 2007 and I've taught and tutored a variety of students ranging from a second grader with learning issues to a visiting professor from Spain who needed to improve his English for professional reasons. I'm also certified to teach English and History in Massachusetts. With that said, I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I am certified in Massachusetts as a Social Studies teacher in grades 5 - 12. Additionally, I have taught social studies (eighth grade) and have tutored it privately. I like to think that I have an in-depth knowledge that ranges from the deeply historical to the most up-to-date issues and events of our time.
