Although math is not everyone's best subject, it doesn't have to be stressful. Anxiety and discouragement often get in the way of students reaching their full potential in math.

I have over 5 years of experience coaching students. I work with each student's learning style, helping them use their strengths to succeed in math. This approach is difficult to apply in a large classroom.

I teach outside the box using real world scenarios to make math tangible. I use examples relevant to each student's interests and visuals to help teach math concepts that are memorable. My goal is to eliminate fear and anxiety around math, while building on each student's strengths.

I see many students who begin to struggle in middle school math after "getting by" in elementary school. Pre-Algebra becomes difficult without the solid foundation of basic skills. I work with students to reinforce these skills, teaching methods and shortcuts that work for each individual, as well as problem-solving strategies which build confidence to tackle any challenge.

I also help students with organization and study skills. We prepare study guides with formulas, diagrams and important information that can can be used for homework, studying, and future courses.

I have an educational background in Engineering and Applied Mathematics. My work experience ranges from software application consulting to private tutoring in Andover and its surrounding towns. I have experience tutoring all levels of Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus as well as test preparation for the following:

- SAT Math
- SAT Subject Tests Math I & II
- ACT Math
- MTEL General Curriculum 03 Math Subtest
- MTEL Elementary Math 53, Middle School Math 47
- HISET

I have fulfilled all state testing requirements for Massachusetts teaching certification in middle school mathematics.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is often the turning point where students who once did well in math begin to have trouble. It is a cumulative subject where all the rules of arithmetic come together and need to be applied. I do a good job of simplifying the basic rules of Pre-algebra so that even the more complex problems can be broken down to the basics. Algebra is like a puzzle where you first have to look at the big picture, break down the pieces into "edges and middle pieces" and then the pieces can be systematically put together .
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have extensive experience teaching Algebra II privately, and have excellent references and a good record for helping students that are struggling to improve their grades. There are many ways to look at a problem in Algebra. Depending on the student's learning style, I teach different techniques to help solve problems, including tricks with factoring, divisibility and always include refreshers from Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Math is cumulative and every skill must be understood along the way.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is quite different from Algebra and often times, students that excel in Algebra may have trouble with Geometry. Geometry is visual which can be helpful with the right examples. Proofs are more logical and can be mastered with the right end result in mind. The basics rules are often skimmed through but are essential to the process. I provide general study guides with formulas and theorems to help every student succeed.

SAT Math,

SAT Math

SAT Math preparation involves reviewing Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Algebra topics learned mostly in Middle School. In addition, the questions require applying these topics in real world scenarios. I offer tutoring based on each student's level of need to review or learn the skills, then work on applying them in practice test problems. Learning how questions are scored, and paying close attention to the often tricky wording within the questions, can make a difference in test outcome. I also offer strategies to overcome anxiety and boost confidence regarding testing. I recommend starting to prepare at least 3-6 months prior to testing so there is less last-minute stress.

Very helpful

Betsy came highly recommended from other parents in our town. She is helping our son learn math fundamentals that he should have learned years ago. Very flexible with scheduling, even meeting our son on the weekends. Thanks!

Great tutor

Betsy has been helping my son with algebra for several months and her ability, knowledge, patience, and compassion have benefited him greatly. Not only have his confidence and math skills improved he actually enjoys his time with Betsy! So very glad she's tutoring him. Wonderful tutor!

Very fun to work with and a great tutor

The tutor is extremely helpful, knowledgeable and patient. She doesn't rush the student when the time is up, therefore I really appreciate her. She helps my son to earn more confidence in his enriched geometry class. He comes to the math class with a positive attitude since he starts taking tutoring lessons with Ms. Betsy. Overall, she is a great tutor and I wished I should have known her a few months ago. I definitely refer friends to her if anyone needs a tutor.

Great tutor for my son

Betsy was very knowledgeable and helped my son get ready for honors geometry entering the 9th grade. My son felt very comfortable working with Betsy. Betsy gave my son a number of helpful study suggestions. I'm sure he'll have a successful year now!

Wonderful tutor!

Betsy has been my 9th grade daughter's geometry tutor this past 3 months, and has made a tremendous difference in her academic life. Not only has she really learned the material, she has grown much more confident in her abilities, which in itself has helped her perform better on tests. Betsy is very patient, very encouraging, and very thorough. She also is incredibly generous with her time, frequently staying longer than the allotted lesson time to make sure my daughter has gotten everything she needs to. And my daughter really likes her! I am so grateful to have found her!

Kim, 23 lessons with Betsy

Excellent tutor!

Betsy has helped my daughter tremendously. Since working with Betsy not only have her grades improved, more importantly, her confidence in math has improved as well.

Best tutor

Betsy was the best thing that happened for my daughter in the area of math! My daughter was studying for an entrance exam for an advanced placement class and the only reason why she did well was because she worked with Betsy. Betsy covered areas that my daughter had not yet learned in school, and she also helped my daughter figure out short cuts in order to move through the test at a good pace. Betsy is one of those people who really understands her students as individuals, is very patient and kind. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a math tutor at any level!

Great tutor

Betsy is currently tutoring two of my children in Algebra 2. They have found her to be an excellent tutor. One child grasps concepts fairly quickly and Betsy challenges him with more complex problems. My other child struggles more and Betsy patiently walks her through the process. She gives clear, concise explanations and is more than willing to provide additional practice work. We are very happy with Betsy's tutoring and recommend her highly.
