Amherst College, Amherst, MA (Music)
Hi! My name is Jennifer Citarelli, though I usually go by Jenny. I am originally from New Jersey, but I currently live in Amherst, MA, having fallen in love with the area while attending Amherst College. My greatest passions are composition, musical theater, music theory, and teaching. However, my scholarly interests stretch well beyond music. I continue to pursue study in the fields of mathematics, literature (especially poetry), and economics, all of which I studied at Amherst College under their Open Curriculum program.
I have experience teaching music as a music camp counselor, a music director for various musical theater productions, a conductor, and as an informal tutor in college and beyond. At Amherst, I was always the person to come to for help with music theory or composition assignments. And it was always a joy to help; It is always a joy to tutor because getting to lead students to those moments of discovery and realization, and getting to share with them the knowledge that inspires me, makes all the effort worthwhile. That is why I teach.
I graduated Cum Laude from Amherst College with a B.A. in Music (GPA 3.4). I also wrote, taught, directed, and performed in a Senior Honors Thesis in composition at Amherst. I have also completed a full-length musical and several dozen songs and other pieces. While at Amherst, I was a member of Amherst College Glee Club, Amherst College Jazz Combos (in which I played drums and occasionally vocals), and a Music Director and performer for Amherst College's Musical Theater Cabaret group.

Jenny is just as present to her students as she is knowledgeable in her subject area. With me every step of the way through the lesson, she met me right where I was (in music theory) and helped me build a solid strategy in my analysis exercises. She helped me in content as well as self-confidence. Thank you Jenny!
Jennifer tutored both of my daughters in SAT prep. Both had very positive feedback. We hope to have Jennifer back soon!
Jennifer is an absolute angel. She takes her job seriously. She is reliable, thoughtful in her approach to her lessons and very patient. She is able to help with executive functioning issue as well as academic issues and can inspire a student who is overwhelmed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
