About Douglas

I have a love of learning and a passion for teaching! I hold a B.S. in biology and have completed extensive coursework in chemistry and physics as well. I scored in the top 5% in the math section of the SAT and the GRE, and the top 10% in the verbal section of those tests. Of course, intelligence alone does not a good teacher make. I am a firm believer that any subject can be accessible and interesting if it is properly explained. I have found that the teachers who best facilitate learning are the ones that break down complex concepts and make them relatable. To quote Einstein : "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Many people find high school and college math complicated and far from intuitive. I break down the hard problems into easier ones. I find common ground with a student, and give them reasons to be interested in the material they are learning. I help you or your child to improve grades, boost confidence, and gain mastery in the subject of interest.

I'm currently a graduate student at Umass Amherst working on my Master's in Education. I am learning new teaching methods, theories of learning, and mentoring strategies. I will be teaching biology and chemistry at the high school level upon graduation.

I meet you at a location of your choice, customize my lessons to your needs, and guarantee reliability and flexibility. I have worked with dozens of students of all ages and look forward to working with you too!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Excellent algebra skills.
I have tutored multiple students in algebra 1 in the past.

Algebra 2

I aced algebra 2 as a sophomore in high school. I have reinforced the skills learned in that class in precalculus and calculus. I feel very comfortable explaining and breaking down concepts and problem solving strategies for algebra 2.

I took a variety of biology courses at Umass Amherst before graduating with my bachelor's in biology. I feel comfortable with the concepts in biochemistry, molecular bio, cellular bio, anatomy and physiology, neuroscience, and ecology. I have successfully helped students with this subject in the past.

I completed 4 distinct chemistry courses and their labs for my biology degree. I have a solid understanding of the concepts involved in the many areas of general chemistry. My algebra skills are also excellent, an important skill in gen Chem.

The GED covers arithmetic skills as well as algebra and geometry. These are all subjects I excelled at in high school and I feel very comfortable teaching the necessary problem solving methods.

Organic Chemistry

I graduated with a bachelor's of science in Biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The biology major requires 4 chemistry courses, which include Organic Chemistry 1 and 2. I passed these courses with a grade of a B- and a B+, respectively. I have an excellent understanding of concepts in organic chemistry, and can reason very well in 3 dimensions. I helped multiple peers master organic chemistry, and feel very comfortable explaining the topics within it.

I got an A in high school precalculus and calculus. I'm able to break down seemingly complex concepts. I am a born problem solver and can teach a variety of problem solving strategies.

SAT Math

I have prepared students for the math SATs in the past and am very familiar with the type of questions on the test as well as the test format. This allows me to pass along problem solving and test taking strategies.
