About Evan

My name is Evan, and I'm currently a senior English major at UMass Amherst. My experience within the English department has prepared me for everything from Shakespeare to twenty-first American literature, and includes a strong background in writing. I have experience tutoring in a writing center at the college level, as well as working with K-12 students one-on-one. I have also worked extensively with ESL and developmental English students through Quinsigamond Community College's tutoring program.

When tutoring, my goal is to help my tutees better understand and utilize what they already know. I do not start sessions without something specific to work on, whether it's an essay or a reading assignment. This promotes both academic honesty and progress as a student. Ultimately the goal is for the student to be able to complete these tasks on his or her own, and I've found both as a student and a tutor that this approach helps immensely. A tutoring session will be comprised mostly of helping the student access what he or she already knows rather than teaching subject material again. This is often done through prompting questions and various guided techniques. Above all else, I strive to share my passion for literature and writing with students, and I hope that in gaining a better understanding of the material they are able to not only pass the class but enjoy it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a junior at UMass Amherst studying English. I have experience working in a college writing center and working with high school students.

Study Skills

I am a junior English major at the Commonwealth Honors College at UMass Amherst, and I have an associate's degree from Quinsigamond Community College. I tutored in the writing center at QCC, where there was a strong emphasis on general study skills and preparedness for writing projects. My experience tutoring students in study skills ranges from helping ESL students prepare for standardized testing in English (such as the TOEFL) to helping students prepare and organize material for their senior theses.
