About Pegeen

¡Hola!
My name is Pegeen K, and I am currently a fourth-year Spanish language student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During the school year I live in Amherst, but I am in the Worcester area during breaks.

I have been taking Spanish classes since I was in the 3rd grade and now as a senior at UMass, my Spanish classes are all graduate-level (500+) courses. When I graduate in May, I will have earned Massachusetts' initial education licensure, which will allow me to teach Spanish to middle and high school students. In fact, I have just spent the last few months in a local public school as a student teacher, and will continue teaching Spanish I and II this coming spring semester.

I have also just returned from 5 months in Spain where I attended la Universidad de Sevilla, lived with a host family, and made many Spanish-speaking friends (with whom I still keep in regular contact - which has kept my own language skills sharp!). I learned so much during my time in Sevilla, and I am eager to go back!

The best way to learn a language is to actually use that language in real-life situations. For this reason, I use a task-based approach when I teach/tutor Spanish. The task-based approach focuses heavily on interpersonal communication and paired learning through a variety of activities. These activities require students to think critically and solve problems, while still achieving specified linguistic goals. The task-based approach uses concrete steps to guide students through the manipulation of the target language, and encourages them to use both their own previous cultural and linguistic knowledge to begin forming connections. By structuring activities around interaction and problem-solving, students are required to use Spanish in a meaningful way, they are drawn out of their linguistic comfort zones, and there is automatically a greater emphasis placed on their fluency.

I also firmly believe that fun/interesting experiences can make learning Spanish easier, and that they create a desire to learn more. As for me, my interest in the Spanish language was piqued by an increasing exposure to Spanish music. The music’s exciting melodies and rhythms provided a fun framework for learning the language while the lyrics challenged me to expand in my own usage of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and idioms. As the years have gone on, I have amassed a large library of Spanish music, and I am constantly on the lookout for more so that I might continue to grow in my understanding of the language. In addition to music, I also augment my own language-learning experiences with games, arts and crafts, cooking, and reading and writing, and I supplement my teaching with those same things.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you in all your language-learning endeavors!

¡Hasta pronto!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
