About Tessa

I'm a college student at UMass Amherst. During the school year, I work as a small group tutor at my school's Learning Resource Center and have tutored there in Organic Chemistry I and Calculus I.

I like to work with all ages in multiple subjects, though my specialties are elementary/middle school/high school math, biology, and chemistry. I'm currently a rising junior studying biochemistry and molecular biology with a 4.00 GPA.

I love tutoring because I love helping students build their confidence and helping them succeed. There's nothing more fulfilling than seeing a student go from being stressed about a hard subject to becoming successful and enthusiastic about it. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've taken two semesters of college calculus and received an A in both classes. From taking advanced math courses in college, I've built up my algebra skills, and have a strong understanding of Algebra I principles. I've been a calculus tutor at my school's Learning Resource Center for 3 semesters. Most of my students there struggle with their algebra skills, and I've become adept at helping them navigate through problems. Additionally, when I was in high school, I tutored middle school algebra students during morning hours. My tutoring style involves having my students learn by doing. As they work through problems, I help them by asking leading questions, giving advice and encouragement, and by giving them strategies to effectively solve the question at hand.

Algebra 2

I've taken two semesters of college calculus and received an A in both classes. In order to be successful in calculus, you need to have strong algebra skills, since most calculations are algebra based. Additionally, I tutored in calculus for a year for my college's Learning Resource Center, and a large focus of mine was to build my student's algebra skills, so that they can effectively answer problems. My tutoring method for math is to facilitate students through practice problems, in order to build their confidence and math abilities.

Biology

I'm a biochemistry major in college who has taken multiple semesters of different types of biology and has a received an A in all of those classes, including Introductory Biology I and II, Introductory Biology Lab, and Cellular and Molecular Biology. I took AP Biology in High School and received a 5, and while I was in high school, I tutored a freshman biology student. My style is to facilitate and quiz my students through the material to encourage real time learning and memorization, as well as to build their confidence in the material.

Chemistry

I'm a biochemistry major who has taken four semesters of college chemistry (General Chemistry I and II and Organic Chemistry I and II) and received an A in all four classes. I tutor Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry at my university (UMass Amherst), and have been working at my school's Learning Resource Center for 3 semesters. My tutoring style involves facilitating students in practice problems in order to build their confidence and abilities, and to encourage students to understand both the concepts behind chemistry principles, as well as the math behind problems.

Elementary Math

I have a strong mathematics background as a science student at UMass Amherst, where I have taken two semesters of college calculus. I received an A in both Calculus I and II, and have worked at my school's Learning Resource Center as a calculus tutor for a year in a half. I also have experience tutoring younger children, and have worked with elementary school and middle school students in the past when I was a high school student. I love working with children and have a lot of patience. Math can be tricky, but I believe with the right amount of guidance, anyone can be successful at it. My tutoring strategy involves having my students work through practice problems while giving them support, words of encouragement, and guidance throughout the process. I'm also a big believer in breaking big concepts down into simpler terms, especially with my younger students. Plus, I think it's important to make math fun by making it relevant to them!

Organic Chemistry

I took both Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II last year and received an A in both classes. Last semester, I tutored Organic Chemistry I for my school's (UMass Amherst) Learning Resource Center.

Prealgebra

I'm a college student studying at UMass Amherst's College of Natural Sciences. I've taken two semesters of college calculus and received As in both classes, and have tutored calculus for 3 semesters at my university's Learning Resource Center. I have a strong foundation in Algebra and Prealgebra, and scored well on the math sections of the SAT and ACT. Most of the math students I work with struggle with algebra basics, and I have become skilled at helping them through problems. Additionally, I work hard with my students to break down concepts so that they are manageable, and have a tutoring philosophy of "learning by doing." Practice makes perfect, and I like to guide my students through problems by giving them guidance, encouragement, and advice.

Precalculus

I have worked at my university's Learning Resource Center as a calculus tutor for a year and a half, and have a very strong foundation in Precalculus principles and concepts. I received an A in both Calculus I and II and have a strong background in algebra, which is important for any precalculus student. Additionally, while I was a senior in high school, I helped to tutor a precalculus student and also have experience in tutoring basic algebra. My tutoring style involves having my students work through practice problems because I believe that the best way to learn is by actually working with the material at hand. As my students work through problems I give them encouragement by guiding them through the process, and by asking leading questions in order to get them thinking about the material.
