About Matthew

I have an M.S. in organic chemistry and have been tutoring chemistry full time for the past three years. I'm an expert at breaking chemistry down into fundamental principles so that students can spend less time memorizing and more time understanding. I've accumulated various tips and tricks over the years that make tricky subjects like stoichiometry, stereochemistry and spectroscopy more manageable.

I have spent many years studying both content and pedagogy in chemistry, especially organic chemistry. Please be wary of other tutors who claim qualifications in organic chemistry teaching. Without some type of graduate training in organic chemistry they will lack both the required content knowledge as well as the ability to properly communicate chemical concepts. High school science teachers might be great for general chemistry, but organic is another beast entirely. Going with a novice tutor in organic chemistry means risking developing bad habits and failing to learn the fundamentals properly.

I take an interest in my students and want them to succeed. For regular students I make myself available for quick questions via email or text, especially helpful the night before a big test. I can also help with study skills and advice for studying "smarter" as opposed to harder.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

General chemistry is by definition a very broad subject. It often challenges students because it combines learning lots of new language with the frequent application of mathematical problem solving.

The common language of chemistry is math, but it's also important to understand in words what each equation represents. I can show you both how to "plug and chug" to get the answer as well as how to understand what all those equations mean.

I can help with all levels of general chemistry including college, high school and AP chemistry.

MCAT

I have taken multiple MCAT practice tests and reviewed the subject matter on the tests. I consistently ace the chemistry sections. I have worked independently for 6 months now as a tutor and coach for students preparing for the MCAT and other standardized tests such as the PCAT.

The MCAT is a challenging test because it randomly mixes questions that test both memorized information and your ability to critically analyze dense reading passages. I can teach you how to quickly identify the "memorized information" questions, giving you more test time to sift through the passages for analysis type questions.

Organic Chemistry

I have an M.S. in organic chemistry, and I specialize in helping people build the strong foundation they will need to succeed in this class. It's never too late though; I've gone back to square one and helped people improve their grades even half way through their second semester!

I can help you with understanding hybridization, mechanistic logic, retrosynthetic analysis, stereochemistry, spectroscopy and also the best way to study.
