About Amelia

I'm an MA candidate and Latin teaching assistant at UMASS-Amherst, and I offer tutoring in Latin and Classical Greek to students of all ages!

I graduated from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a BA in Classical Civilizations. After graduation, I have worked as a classical languages, writing, and literature tutor, teaching students ranging from middle schoolers to doctoral candidates. Further, I have taught Latin at St. Norbert in the Chicago area, before returning to school to pursue a masters in Latin teaching at the University of Massachusetts. While I love helping students with any language-related subject (in fact, I truly enjoy analyzing English grammar!), I am most passionate about teaching Latin. I find it extremely gratifying when my students realize that a so-called "dead" language can actually be relevant to their lives! When tutoring Latin, I like to focus on using various strategies to help students "read with expectations, " meaning that students engage in linear reading (reading left-to-right, without skipping around), and approach texts with a notion of what makes a sentence complete. More generally, as a tutor, I am very patient and flexible, always keeping a student's goals and motivations in mind when planning and teaching lessons.

In addition to tutoring Latin and Greek, I also help students brainstorm, edit, and proofread essays and term papers. I am well-versed in MLA, APA, and Chicago style and citation conventions. Additionally, I have experience checking and formatting Bluebook citations for legal papers.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

In 2011, I graduated from the University of Michigan with highest distinction and a degree in Classical Civilizations. I also won departmental honors for outstanding achievement in my concentration. Additionally, as a junior high Latin teacher, I frequently incorporate Greek and Roman culture units into my lesson plans.

As a Classical Studies concentrator, I have taken six semesters of Classical Greek, and I have experience reading both prose (e.g. Plato, Xenophon, Herodotus) and poetry (Euripides).

Additionally, I have worked as an introductory Greek tutor, teaching out of Hansen and Quinn's "Greek: an Intensive Course."

Delightfully fastidious and engaging — Amelia took our 16 year old from an uphill battle to level ground. She has thorough preparation, connects quickly, and shapes the session with steady content. Her enjoyment of her subject area takes her teaching to a higher level. My son has never been able to get through language assignments as independently as he has with Amelia's organizational suggestions. ...
