For 7 years I taught at the innovative and successful DeKalb County Writing Center in Atlanta, Georgia. All teachers at the center had extensive training in the Bay Area Writing Project Writing Process. In 2007, I took additional training with Amherst Artists and Writers in Amherst, MA.

I have had over 300 articles published in publications such as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Magazine, Port City Life Magazine, Times Record Newspaper, Complete Woman, Woman's World, Creative Loafing, Living with Children, the San Antonio Woman and many others. One of the articles won first place in magazines from the International Reading Association.

It is my greatest joy in life to assist others in realizing their ability to read and write. I know that I am good at this because I believe that all of us have the ability to become readers and writers. Some of us just don't know it yet.

Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Reading Education. There are many ways to learn to read. A great many people learn to read by following along as their parents read books to them. People who learn this way are using the sight and sound method. Other people learn to read by mastering the Dolch Sight Word List and then using these words as they read. Others use the phonics method. Ideally, learning to read should use both methods. There are, however, some people who cannot learn to read this way. They need to learn using the kinesthetic/auditory method where they trace words in sand, listen as the teacher says the word, then say the word themselves. In learning to read it is very important for a student to be surrounded by a print-rich environment. There should be books and magazines in the home. Too much television can sometimes be detrimental. But on the other hand, some television shows actually help with reading. Watching Elmo, for example, is one way to learn sounds and words.

Encouraging, supportive and knowledgeable

Bonnie gave me tips on how to approach reading keeping in mind the specific types of difficulty I have. She read my written work and encouraged me to continue writing. She assured me that I had the background and skills to communicate effectively. I am confident Bonnie will be an excellent reading specialist as well as a great writing coach. It was nice to find both skills in one person.

Best Tutor. Definitely recommend!

We found Bonnie very knowledgeable, very detail, responsible and accommodating. She is very patient with my daughter. Bonnie puts in extra efforts and time to research for materials and online practice tests that could help my daughter better prepare for a big test. She even goes out of her way to purchase 2 books to give my daughter extra help. Bonnie communicates to us well about my daughter's progress after every lesson. I highly recommend her to anyone. We will definitely call on her when we need extra help with my kid's lessons.
