Greetings! I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition and a minor in Political Science. Greetings! I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition and a minor in Political Science. I subsequently went on to earn a Master's degree in Music Composition from Longy School of Music of Bard College. As a student at both institutions, I served in tutoring roles to younger students. During my time in school, I was lucky enough to study under some excellent teachers, and have tried to carry forward what I found most helpful from their tutelage, while also meeting the needs of each individual student. By starting with a broad overview, then narrowing in on specific area, using diverse method of understanding, and reserving time to practice and demonstrate comprehension, I have had success helping students make sense of the lesson's topic both in its own right and in its overall context.

As mentioned above, I tutored music students during both of my degree programs, primarily in music theory and ear training (cumulatively about 5 years). During that time and since, I have maintained a private studio, teaching students of various ages and skill levels (roughly 3 years). The majority of my private students have been guitarists, though I always try to include elements of music theory to help the student have a greater overall understanding. For the students I have taught theory and composition to, the equation is reversed: I always recommend attempting to apply what we've discussed theoretically to actual writing or performance. In this way, whether the student is a guitarist or someone trying to improve their theory knowledge, there is a link drawn between ways in which theory and application are related.

My main goal is for your success in understanding your area of study and applying your knowledge effectively, so we will work together to craft the lesson plan which produces the best results for you. If you have any questions or would like to set up a lesson, please feel free to contact me and I will be in touch shortly!

Composition (Music)

I am an active composer of a wide range of styles, from classical to new music, jazz to rock, and everywhere in between. I have been lucky to earn both awards and grants for my works in recent years. I have taught elements of composition to students in conjunction with theory, and have served as an advisor/proofreader to fellow composers.

General Music

Having worked in music theory, composition, performance (guitar and percussion), and music administrative roles, I have a well rounded knowledge of music. Whether in search of an in depth understanding of theory and composition, developing your guitar technique, or merely seeking to have a greater appreciation for music and its history, we will work together to help you reach your goals.

Guitar

I have been an actively performing guitarist for over 12 years, with guitar as my primary instrument since I was young. I both work in and teach a broad array of styles, primarily rock, jazz, blues, and contemporary classical music. For the past 3+ years, I have maintained a roster of regular guitar students of varying skill levels and ages.
Music Theory

Music Theory

Having completed Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music composition, I spent a considerable amount of time studying music theory. Since 2015, I have tutored students from a beginning level up through undergraduate level on music theory and ear training.
