Greetings! I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition and a minor in Political Science. I subsequently went on to earn a Master's degree in Music Composition from Longy School of Music of Bard College. As a student at both institutions, I served in tutoring roles to younger students. During my time in school, I was lucky enough to study under some excellent teachers, and have tried to carry forward what I found most helpful from their tutelage, while also meeting the needs of each individual student. By starting with a broad overview, then narrowing in on specific area, using diverse method of understanding, and reserving time to practice and demonstrate comprehension, I have had success helping students make sense of the lesson's topic both in its own right and in its overall context.
As mentioned above, I tutored music students during both of my degree programs, primarily in music theory and ear training (cumulatively about 5 years). During that time and since, I have maintained a private studio, teaching students of various ages and skill levels (roughly 3 years). The majority of my private students have been guitarists, though I always try to include elements of music theory to help the student have a greater overall understanding. For the students I have taught theory and composition to, the equation is reversed: I always recommend attempting to apply what we've discussed theoretically to actual writing or performance. In this way, whether the student is a guitarist or someone trying to improve their theory knowledge, there is a link drawn between ways in which theory and application are related.
My main goal is for your success in understanding your area of study and applying your knowledge effectively, so we will work together to craft the lesson plan which produces the best results for you. If you have any questions or would like to set up a lesson, please feel free to contact me and I will be in touch shortly!
