When I perform I fuse my studies in music theory, musicianship, vocal technique, performance technique, acting, and diction into a single intellectual entity of artistic presentation. I have spent a number of years trying to hone the art of musical performance. I am now seeking to add teaching to my list of professional attributes, working on commencing my career as a music teacher with emphasis in vocal pedagogy. Throughout college and graduate school my main focus was almost exclusively centered on performance. Teaching was subsidiary and, unfortunately, never allowed to blossom into an area of intrigue. It is something that has gradually emerged over time through greater exposure to a more diverse array of music classes and through my own evolution as a person.

My official teaching experience does remain minimal at this point in my career. However, I am positive that it is a newfound penchant and that it occupies a significant proponent of my complexion as a human being. Over time I have done a fair amount of unofficial tutoring with other students in school and have increasingly acquired sentiments of satisfaction, self-confidence, and joy from collaborating and aiding other colleagues in our schoolwork. Tutoring has gradually evolved from an afterthought to an area of foremost vocational significance over the past few years since I started graduate school. My informal tutoring has included topics and projects in music theory and music history, in human anatomy/physiology, in diction, and in vocal technique. All of these experiences have been highly rewarding and altruistically gratifying. Music Theory,

Music Theory

I have taken a total of eight semesters of music theory through the course of my undergraduate and graduate careers. Topics have ranged from the transparent primitive elements of music to the more opaque intricacies of subjects such as eighteenth century fugal counterpoint, nineteenth century chromatic voice-leading, and twentieth century atonal structuring. Moreover, I have composed my own music at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, an essential practical tool for the application, training, as well as enjoyment and, thus, veritable learning of theoretical principles.

Voice (Music)

I have been singing both as a student as well as professionally since my sophomore year of college. Included among my chief engagements are lead and supplementary roles with both professional and university opera productions, professional and university based concert recitals, chorus with professional opera companies, ensemble and bass section leader with my church, and a few musical theatre gigs. I have experience auditing and providing feedback for collegiate voice lessons. I have studied vocal pedagogy and the Alexander Technique at the graduate level and am well-versed in scholarly publications within the pedagogic literature by revered vocal connoisseurs. Moreover, I am an associate member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and hold a Certificate of Distinction in Vocal Pedagogy from the Boston Conservatory.
