I'm Haoming, a 24 year old female with a passion to help others with my knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity. I began tutoring at UC Berkeley's academic center, where I facilitated students' learning in subjects such as algebra, calculus, and chemistry. The two-year experience taught me how to improve students learning strategies effectively. I like to ask probe questions and listen to student's concerns to know their strengths and weaknesses, so that I can work together with the student to not only work on problems, but also grow as a life-long learner.
I particularly like one-on-one tutoring because it gives me ample opportunities to engage my students and spark their interest in the subjects. I am also accommodating and wish to find the best way possible to help my students. I want to expand my teaching subjects to include Chinese Mandarin and TOEFL, so that I can help more people reach their goals in GPA, tests, and learning skills.
I have a solid foundation in algebra since high school, and college-level calculus classes further enhanced my skills to solve problems in algebra. With a perfect SAT math score and two years of math tutoring experience, I know the effective ways to solve problems and to improve students' logical thinking skills.
As a native Chinese Mandarin speaker, I was graduated from high school in Beijing. I can guide students to achieve accurate pronunciations and hone their understanding in grammar and sentence structures. All these skills would allow students to improve in reading comprehension and listening tests.
I took TOEFL ETS for college application and received a score of 115 out 120. As an international student, I understand the struggles of learning a new language and preparing for the specific test. Through college and graduate school studies in the US, I further improved my English speaking, listening, and writing skills. These experiences would allow me to help students effectively.
With wide range of skills and experiences, I'm able to provide learning strategies beyond single subject. Patient and encouraging, I wish to know my students as learners and individuals, and facilitate them to reach their goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Growing up in Beijing, I learned to read and write as a native Mandarin speaker. I came to the US for undergraduate studies and have facilitated college students with their Chinese listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I incorporated historical context to what people learned to help them understand Chinese culture and learn words and characters. Basic knowledge in Chinese culture not only made learning more interesting, but also enhanced their writing and reading skills. When allowed, I would also explain and teach in Chinese to help students practice speaking and listening skills. My understanding in both ancient and modern Chinese culture and accurate pronunciation would allow me to teach Chinese at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels.
