About Kai

Languages are indispensable tools for expressing thoughts and feelings. I am always amazed by the number of languages that I can hear in the real life. When walking on the street, I can hear the euphonious melody of passers-by’s languages and see the artistic calligraphy fonts of advertisements on the trains. People connect with the world via languages: Some use a lingua franca like English to share perspectives while others learn their loved ones’ language to have a spiritual connection. Being a language teacher, I want to exert myself to create the key to the world that my students want to explore for them.

Students are eager to become fluent in conversing with native speakers of the language they are learning rather than merely performing tedious grammar exercises or learning new vocabulary. However, the textbooks they use are more inclined to provide vocabulary lists and grammar translations to build up students’ language foundation most of the time. I reckon that it is teachers responsibility to bridge the gap between students’ needs and textbooks with teachers’ well-designed instructional activities and supplementary materials. Also, creating real world connections that are relevant to students’ life is the core of the lesson planning. When I worked for the Educational Resource Center in Boston University, I was the Mandarin Chinese conversational tutor for students who wanted to have extra speaking practice after class. I designed different topics about daily practicalities to elicit students’ spontaneous speech about their life. For example, the main topic for week 3 was Shopping and there were various sub-topics: basic shopping phrases, shopping clothes, shopping in a supermarket, returning items and getting refunds, giving compliments and complaints. Students were encouraged to use the grammar and vocabulary they had learned in class to perform role play conversations that they must have had in their real life. Students found it intriguing to practice their second language in such way and they told me they memorized the grammar patterns and new words better.

Native speaker of Mandarin Chinese.

In Boston University, I provided high-quality one-on-one language lessons to students enrolled in ROTC Program from novice to upper-intermediate level of Mandarin Chinese.
Also, I developed different language coaching courses tailored to students’ level and needs.

Furthermore, I was the Chinese language Leader in Boston University Educational Resource Center for one year, I trained beginner, intermediate and advanced level of Mandarin Chinese conversational skills and integrated Chinese cultural events and various daily topics in Mandarin speaking practice to help students increase language fluency and cultural knowledge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I'm a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese. Before going to Boston University for my master program in School of Education, I had been a language teacher in China for six years. During my time in BU, I had been teaching Mandarin Chinese to ROTC students and I was the Chinese language leader in Boston University Education Center for 1 year. After graduating from BU, I have been teaching English, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese on online platforms.
