About Emily

Having received a Bachelors of Science in English Education from Boston University, it has always been my goal to share my passion for reading and writing with others. Given my skills for organization and my extensive experience as a copy editor post graduation, my goals as a tutor are to A) develop a passion for literature and language in my students, B) increase my students' essay writing and proofreading abilities, and C) cultivate my students ability to persevere through difficult assignments. This passion, practice, and perseverance will enable my students to excel in any task involving the written word regardless of subject or chosen profession.

I specialize in tutoring in English and Language Arts, and am able to work with students in any area that encompasses, having in the past tutored for everything from SAT prep to Law School essays. As the ability to read and write well is necessary for all subject areas, I am willing to help with reading/written work for most topics.

Bachelor's Degree, Secondary Education, Specializing in English
Project Manager and Copy Editor at MRCC, involving the development of online courses in subjects varying from Criminal Justice to Astronomy (2 years).

I am able to meet in-person either on the weekend (all day Saturday, 2pm-10pm Sunday) and in the evenings from 7pm onwards, and I am able to travel to students or meet them in some other location (coffee shop/library). With writing and reading development, more than one session will probably be necessary, and so I am also willing to be available for online sessions at whatever times can be agreed upon throughout the day. I look forward to working together with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

While I have long had a passion for great literature, more importantly, I hold a Bachelors of Science in English Education from Boston University. During my four years of study there, my coursework included classes on Shakespeare, modern and classical American literature, modern and classical British literature, and the teaching of reading.

Proofreading

Having received a Bachelors of Science in English Education from Boston University, much of my coursework related specifically to the teaching of English and language arts, and I spent extensive amounts of time writing and editing. My experience as a copy editor and project manager for a firm creating online courses for various subjects also provided me with opportunities to write, edit, and proofread online courses in various subjects from Astronomy to Criminal Justice.

Reading

Having received a Bachelors of Science in English Education from Boston University, much of my coursework related specifically to the teaching of English and language arts, including the course "Teaching Reading". My experience as a copy editor and project manager for a firm creating online courses for various subjects also provided me with valuable insight as the different ways students process information, allowing me to modify the courses in such a way as to make reading and understanding the material simpler.

Writing

Having received a Bachelors of Science in English Education from Boston University, I spent most of my four years writing and editing essays on anything from Shakespeare to Special Education best practices, with extensive coursework in the teaching of reading and language arts. As a copy editor and project manager for a firm specializing in online courses, I also worked with subject matter experts to edit and improve their course material in a way that would be more engaging to students.
