About Deanna

I have long been committed to working with students and helping them to develop the skills needed for academic as well as personal success. I have held paid professional tutoring positions since I was a teenager, working with high school, college, and graduate school students in subjects including math, history, anthropology, Spanish, English, and Ancient Greek. I have experience teaching Ancient Greek at the college level, have been a Teaching Fellow at Brandeis University for ancient literature and gender studies courses, and am currently a high school Latin teacher at both an all-girls rural boarding school and a co-ed urban day school, and therefore I have experience working with students from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. Having the experience of working with both a varied age range and also diverse subject areas has helped me to see that regardless of the situation, any level of learning can be achieved with proper guidance and teaching.

My experiences as both an educator and as a student have shown me that being a “teacher” or a "tutor" is much more than transferring information from one mind to another. I have had the opportunity to really know the students that I have worked with, discovering not only their learning styles but also their stories; this interpersonal element has allowed me to become a better educator. Through our interactions and their learning, my students discover that they can make conscious decisions and choices to better themselves, to accept and work through challenges, and to develop resilience. I work to help my students not only master material but also develop time management, leadership and critical thinking abilities. These skills will help students succeed and move forward throughout their lives, and are what I hope to continue to help students develop.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

My recently completed Master’s thesis, entitled, “A Nostalgic View of the Past and the Degradation of Roman Politics Under the Principate: The Role of Germanicus in Tacitus’ Annales” was awarded Highest Honors and has prepared me as an expert in Silver Age Roman literature. I have studied ancient prose and poetry throughout my college and graduate career, and I am well qualified to teach not only Latin and Ancient Greek languages, but also the respective art, culture, customs, and traditions of these ancient societies. I have had extensive field training in archaeology in Italy and experience in Greece studying the art and architecture of ancient societies, and these experiences all inform and enrich my teaching.

Piano

I began playing piano when I was four years old. I continued to practice it throughout my childhood, but began to take it seriously in college. Throughout my four years at Franklin & Marshall College, I was classically trained by Elizabeth Keller, a renowned professional concert pianist. My repertoire includes, but is not limited to, Piano Sonata No.8 in C Minor, Op.13 -"Pathétique": 2. Adagio Cantabile by Beethoven, Sonata in C Minor, Op. 13 "Pathetique": I. Grave - Allegro molto e con brio by Rachmaninoff, Valse Op 64. No 2. Waltz in c sharp minor #7 Valentina Lisitsa by Chopin, The Seasons, Op. 37 bis August by Tchaikovsky, and Clair de Lune by Debussy. My strong background in piano in addition to my extensive experience tutoring and teaching makes me an excellent piano tutor.

connected with child

Deanna immediately connected with my daughter (can't put a price tag on that) and was quickly able to figure her strengths and weaknesses in preparing for a Latin exam. Prior to the tutoring session my daughter felt overwhelmed, now she feels confident as she is able to follow the study roadmap created with Deanna. Thank you!
