Harvard University (Molecular Biology)
As an undergraduate student at Harvard University I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Chinatown After-school Program, one of the many educational initiatives at the Phillips Brooks House Association. I served two and a half years as a counselor, one semester as a grade coordinator, and one year as the director. The program allowed me to not only help elementary school students regarding their homework assignment, it also offered me the opportunity to plan and teach my own creative lessons. I had designed and taught a diverse array of academic topics ranging from U.S. history to cellular biology.
In addition to my experience teaching at Chinatown After-school, I am currently one of the mentors at the Harvard Crimson Summer Academy. The academy provides a rigorous curriculum each summer for ninety high-achieving high school students from the Boston and Cambridge school district, and the mentors are responsible for assisting the professors with homework grading and office hour. Over the past summer I served as a mentor for the quantitative reasoning class, a class combining traditional math with real world applications. My duty as a Crimson Summer Academy mentor also extends throughout the school, in which I meet with my assigned scholars regularly to discuss any issues relating to their academics.
Together my experiences in Chinatown After-school and in the Harvard Crimson Summer Academy have led me to develop skills necessary for effectively conveying my lessons in different class topics to a diverse range of student population. Furthermore, I have discovered my own teaching style. I will be tutoring primarily math and sciences and I believe the first step in academic achievement in these subjects is a solid foundation of understanding of the principle concepts. Different students will approach this step according to their own preference. After discovering a student's learning (visual, verbal, etc) I will teach the concepts based on the learning style that they prefer. After a student has established a good understanding of the concepts I will stress the importance of practice. I will administer practice problems in increasing level of difficulty, with each level further strengthening the student's understanding of a concept. Through thorough explanation of scientific and mathematical concepts and diligent practice, anyone can achieve in these courses!
I was born in China, and I immigrated to Boston when I was 14. Unable to speak English I struggled with first year of high school. Furthermore, my high school did not offer the support I needed to succeed in the classroom. I understand the importance of a tutor that one can trust and can rely on. I know that it can get difficulty when falling behind the classroom and I want to help you get back on your feet and achieve at a high level!

I have a successful experience applying to universities in 2008. I was accepted into 12 of the 15 universities that I had applied to, and I eventually decided to matriculate at Harvard. I have been an employee of the Harvard Crimson Summer Academy for the past two years. The program's mission is to provide opportunities to underprivileged students in the Boston Public Schools system to achieve at a higher level, and to help them get into selective colleges. I have been a mentor for the program's college counseling class for the past two summers. The college counseling class covers application basics, admission requirements, as well as emphasis on the college essay. I am confident that my role in helping these Crimson Summer Academy scholars in the college application process qualifies me for this subject.
I majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University, where principles of genetics formed the core of my studies and research experience. I have worked at Boston Children's Hospital as a research assistant in college, and I was exposed to the applications of genetic principles to experiments in the lab. In addition, I took another genetics course at the Harvard Extension School this spring and received an A in the course. I am confident in my knowledge of this subject, although I have not tutored anyone in this area, I believe my coursework and research experience will help me achieve as a genetics tutor.
