About Ashley

Hello everyone! My name is Ashley. I am a graduate of The University of Michigan and Tulane University, and currently work full-time for a healthcare technology company in Boston. I have a Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience and a Masters of Public Health in Nutrition. Having been a tutor for over 9 years and having been tutored myself, I understand the overwhelming feeling we sometimes get from certain subjects. I find excitement in watching students grow and better understand, and am here to help.

I have over 300 hours of tutoring experience in Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, Biology, Chemistry, English, SAT, and ACT subjects. I also have experience in proofreading college application essays and preparing for standardized tests. My tutoring experience comes from working as a Teaching Assistant for a high school special education Algebra class, being professionally trained as a Tutor and Academic Coach at RST Learning Studio, and tutoring through Wyzant. From these positions, I've recognized and developed the most effective ways to explain concepts, while instilling the confidence, motivation, and most valuable study habits in my students.

I look forward to potentially working with you or your student!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have worked as an Academic Coach/Tutor for several students preparing to take the ACT. I began ACT English tutoring sessions by introducing the basics of the English portion of the ACT (how many questions, how much time, what to expect), and discussing helpful hints for understanding the questions and managing time. I then used old ACT practice exams and problems to help students get a feel for what types of questions to expect, and administered them in an environment as similar to an ACT testing site as possible. My students improved their test scores throughout their tutoring experience, and gained confidence and excitement in applying to colleges.

ADD/ADHD

I was chosen to be a Teaching Assistant for a special education Algebra 1 class during my senior year of high school. I worked with students one-on-one in the class to help them understand the material and teach them study habits. I recognized the ways in which students with ADD and ADHD (as well as autism and OCD) think and learn, and learned how to be patient, understanding, and effective in keeping students engaged in the material without getting frustrated. I've developed ways to keep students excited about class, and motivated to learn more.

Biology

I have tutored high school and first-year college students in Biology, and have taken several courses in the area. I have taken AP Biology in high school, as well as Cellular and Molecular Biology, Ecology/Evolutionary Biology, Biopsychology, Biochemistry, and Biological Basis of Disease at the college/graduate level. I am able to explain biological concepts, as well as share helpful study strategies for memorizing material.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring since 2008, and have helped students of all ages and levels learn and comprehend material. I was an elected teaching assistant for a special education algebra class from September 2008-June 2009, a Reach Out and Read literacy advocate for young children from September 2009-January 2010, and a volunteer tutor for middle and high school students in all subject areas from September 2009-June 2010. I was also professionally trained as a tutor/academic coach at RST learning studio for middle school, high school, and college students, and worked with the establishment from January 2012-August 2012. I have extensive non-tutoring experience working with young children through volunteer organizations in which I have read to kindergarteners, worked as a teacher's assistant in a 1st grade class, and have read to children ages 0-10 in pediatric doctor's offices throughout Michigan. I feel comfortable working with young children, and have the patience and energy required to help them understand and succeed!

Organic Chemistry

I completed Organic Chemistry I and II (with labs) at The University of Michigan. I loved the classes, and developed the most effective study habits to learn the mass amounts of information introduced. I attended office hours every week, and helped fellow classmates better understand the material. I can help with stereochemistry, nomenclature, chemical reactions, and other fundamental concepts. I have a lot of material, resources (websites and old class work), and knowledge in the area to share with students in need!

Study Skills

I was hired as an Academic Coach/Tutor at RST Learning Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan to help students understand material in various subject areas and to help with general study skills. Rather than telling the students how to do problems or teaching the material, we were trained to make sure each student understands how he/she can take what we shared with them during the tutoring session and study independently. We made sure that each student knew HOW to do each problems and study material using helpful strategies like making worksheets, using dry erase boards, watching educational videos to understand biological processes for example, and making flashcards. It was my job to instill confidence, excitement, and dedication in my students.
