About Benjamin

Dear potential students and parents,

My name is Ben, and I would like to thank you for considering me as a tutor for either yourself or your child.

I am a 6th Grade Math Teacher in a local school district, and I am licensed through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to teach Elementary education (Grades 1-6). I am 26 years old, have access to reliable transportation, have several professional and personal references available, and have no criminal history. I hope you find through my work and education history, as well as my tutoring methods, which are all listed below, that I am highly qualified to tutor either yourself or your child.

My work and volunteer history has long been focused on honing my skills as an educator; I have been a volunteer Sunday School teacher since January 2007, a certified peer tutor at my college during my entire undergraduate experience, and I worked at a Job Corps center as an academic instructor for GED candidates for a year. I currently work as a sixth grade teacher at a middle school in the greater Springfield area (details are available upon request), and I help over seventy students achieve success on state and national assessments.

To academically prepare myself for both my career and for part-time tutoring, I have completed an impressive amount of professional development and academic preparation. I have a master's degree in education, as well as a license to teach elementary education in addition to mathematics through eight grade in Massachusetts. As a schoolteacher, I have taken several professional development workshops, further designed to improve my skills as an effective educator.

All of my work and education history compliments and culminates in my tutoring methods. In a given tutoring session, I greet the student, ask how they are doing, and ask what they want to get done in the session. After writing these goals down on a piece of paper and assuring the student that we will accomplish these goals together, I use a combination of Socratic questioning, direct instruction, modeling and observation to guide the student through the material. First, I establish what the student knows about the topic they wish to learn about by asking some simple questions regarding the topic. Next, I give the student an introduction of the material being covered, and show the student how I would work through the material. Afterwards, I would do an example of the material we just covered with the student, and continue until I was confident that the student could do the material independently. After this, I would ask the student to work on the material independently for a set amount of time, answering any questions the student might have while they are working. Finally, I would check the work that the student completed, and discuss how we met the goal of the session, as well as any goals we might want to outline for future sessions. I would complete the session by bidding the student farewell after planning when the next session would be.

Thank you for considering me to be a tutor for either yourself or your child. I wish either yourself or your child the absolute best in your/their respective academic endeavors.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra I is the first serious course in mathematics most students will take in high school, or for some students, late middle school. In Algebra I, the most important skills that students need to understand are how to solve equations, how to factor binomial and polynomial expressions into monomial and binomial factors, how to solve quadratic equations, how to solve integer operations (use negative numbers), how to graph equations, solve for the slope of equations, and simplify equations using order of operations and the combination of like terms.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a certified elementary teacher in Massachusetts, I can teach beginning reading, writing, spelling, history, arithmetic, science, and social studies. I have one year's experience teaching the 5th grade, and prior to that I completed a student teaching practicum that lasted twelve weeks. I had many field experiences teaching Elementary education classes throughout my undergraduate studies; each experience lasted 10 hours.

GED

To pass the mathematics part of the GED, candidates need to be able to fluently work with fractions, decimals, percents, arithmetic operations, algebra I, geometry, word problems, data, and negative numbers. Candidates for the English part of the GED need to be able to proficiently read, write, answer reading comprehension questions, spell, have a decent vocabulary, and analyze/critically review the writing of others.

Prealgebra

As a sixth grade mathematics teacher and technology coach, I work with the Big Ideas curriculum, and have online access to all materials from sixth through eighth grade. I can also help with computer-based testing preparations.
