About Don

I am a recently retired Harvard Business School administrator (BA from University of Pennsylvania, MALD from Fletcher, Tufts, and MBA from BU), who has extensive experience tutoring high school and college students in a variety of academic disciplines. These include: English, Latin and Greek, International Relations and Political Science, Environmental Law and Policy, Sociology, and History, Marketing and Management, and French and German, among others. I have also helped local students -- as well as those who come from international backgrounds -- prepare for SATs, AP tests, GREs, Foreign Service exam, etc.

Though I'm well aware of the kinds of requirements for each discipline listed above, I tailor my tutoring efforts to the individual needs of each student. I've found that helping students understand the genuine and attainable goals that will enable them to succeed academically and career-wise make this essential. I try to make the sessions both productive and enjoyable.

I have experience teaching international students to prepare for SAT, APs, and other tests. I also have extensive writing evaluation experience.

I greatly enjoy helping students improve both their grades and scores as well as their academic and lifelong understanding of using such skills in their careers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Again, please see my tutor profile.
Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards,
Don L.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored individual adults in Greece and in Germany, always using English conversation as the basis for our learning, with writing as a complementary area and the more formal development of the English language.

Geography

I did my graduate work in International Relations, which required thorough knowledge of World Geography. I've also tutored individual graduate students -- as well as college and high school ones -- on this subject and US Geography. I also spent my junior year in college abroad, where I studied regional geography and traveled extensively. Geography is one of my greatest academic and "real world" passions, and thus very high on my list of subjects I'd like to provide tutoring in.

Reading

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring students in strengthening their English language skills -- writing, reading, speaking, test prep, etc. I have worked with both American/native speakers and non-native English speakers. Although they confront different challenges, the ultimate goal is the same: improve their ability to use the English language in all its forms. I try to make my tutoring sessions both focused and fun, so that we make real progress each time and the student comes away from it feeling stronger but not exhausted. Finally, because each student is different it is important for me to evaluate his or her strengths, challenges, and learning style. This process builds from each session and can also enhance overall learning a great deal.

SAT Reading

My areas of expertise are tutoring Reading, Writing, Critical Thinking, and all things related to the English language. This includes test prep for SAT, ACT, PSAT, pre-ACT, SSAT, etc.
