About Nathan

After a 29 year career as writer and manager in the high technology industry, I am focused on helping elementary and middle school students be successful in Science, STEM subjects, and English.

Throughout my lifetime I'ved worked with children in many capacities. My wife and I raised 2 successful children who completed degrees at very competitive 4-year colleges and are employed full time. Through coaching, teaching and leading, I’ve realized personal fulfillment and enjoyment helping young people advance and flourish and develop self confidence and awareness.

My teaching methods are flexible in order to meet the unique needs of the student. One of my goals for each session is to keep the student challenged without letting the student get overwhelmed. The student learns best by hands-on learning and support from the teacher.

I hold myself to a high standard and ask clients for feedback. I look forward to helping you achieve success in your studies. 24 hour lesson cancellation policy.

Experience working with youth:
Substitute science teacher, Beaver Country Day School.
Volunteer, teaching students about science and plants, Tower Hill Botanic Garden.
Part-time after school teacher at "Wicked Cool for Kids" teaching STEM classes and developing curriculum for elementary students.
Taught 1st grade and 5th grade science at Buckingham Browne and Nichols Lower School, Cambridge, MA. (1 year) and participated in their overnight outdoor education program.

Led friends, immediate and extended family, and camp groups on single-day and overnight mountain backpacking trips. When leading people into the wilderness my approach is to help people realize and experience the positive and restorative benefits of being connected to nature and enhance their physical and mental health and spiritual well-being.

Worked with physically challenged children, families of limited means and challenging lives at home, athletes, and high achievers.

Volunteered as a coach for a girls (ages 7 -13) soccer team (7 years).

Former camp counselor, trip leader, and Campcraft department head at Camp O-At-Ka, Sebago, Maine and a mountain trip leader at Camp Hazen in Connecticut.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I have a degree in Environmental Science with a strong concentration in Botany and Horticulture. A lifelong gardener of vegetables and flowers, I recently took a refresher course in Horticulture at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden. On a volunteer basis I teach students about plants at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Gardening and plants are one of my passions.

Ecology

I'm currently teaching a group of students in Botany, Ecology, and Climate Change.

Good sessions

Nathan has helped my son on improving his vocabulary and writing. He is very patient, and creative on finding ways to encourage my son to express his thoughts and ideas, organize them and then write them down.
