I am extremely pleased with the help Steve has been able to give my daughter in Geometry. He explains the material thoroughly, is extremely patient, and in a very short time, we have seen very positive results on her tests and work at school! He is very responsive, even was able to schedule additional sessions before a test. Clearly, Steve made a difference for our daughter!
My daughter will soon take her intro stats final. Steve has been reviewing the material with her. We’ve met with Steve twice and he’s been punctual, flexible with meeting times and pleasant and has helped my daughter calmly review in a subject she finds very challenging. She is feeling confident that she will be prepared for the final (college-level class).
Thank you for the chocolate and reviewing the Calculus. Steve is very helpful reinforcing what I am learning in class. Steve is very good at breaking down the concepts into easy to understand steps for my Calculus homework.
My daughter was studying for a Geometry test and needed help grasping some new concepts. Steve provided the exact level of support she needed and answered all of her questions. He helped quell her anxiety about the test and she is feeling much more prepared.
My son's Geometry grades improved dramatically in a short period of time. He enjoys working with Steve and his confidence has improved along with his grades. Always meets on time where they agreed (library) and finds an extra time slot when my son has a big exam coming up.
At our first lesson Steve helped our daughter prepare for a chapter test. The content was using exponents, and factoring expressions. There were a number of forms of expressions to factor, including polynomials, single and multivariate, variable exponents, sums and differences of square and cubes, and complex expressions that included perfect squares. A couple they had not seen before, but my daughter had the class notes on how to do them, so they figured them out together, which was great. Several she had not been taught either (like trinomials squared) but they figured those ones out too.
Steve has a kind, quiet and patient teaching style, which suits our daughter very well. She very much looks forward to working with Steve on a weekly basis in order to keep her grade up. Highly recommended.
Steve is an amazing find! I have been looking for a knowledgeable tutor to help my son with his honors calculus and honors physics. Steve was extremely knowledgeable! He was a great aid in helping my son work through the material he has been studing. He also sent a me a very detailed report of their study session, which I found extreemly helpful. I'm looking forward to seeing how my son progress with his help.
Steve helped my daughter correct a mistake she was making repeatedly He was patient and straight forward about what they did and didn't cover during the hour. She knew exactly how to proceed from there.
Steve is patient and knows how to work with teenagers. He can quickly pinpoint where the trouble areas may be and then works with the student to strengthen those skills.
Steve takes a sincere interest in helping our son. He has an expert knowlege of the material. He is also very good at diagnosing his strengths and weaknesses which enables him to make suggestions how we can get additional help for him from scooll since our son has an IEP. Highly, highly recommend him.
Steve was fantastic. My son actually came away saying he felt good that we contacted him and feels like he will finally be able to understand Geometry.
His methodical, thorough and calm teaching style is really taking the fear and frustration out of tackling some of the hard problems.
We used Steve for two years as a math tutor. My son was initially reluctant to use a tutor, but Steve made him feel comfortable from the first session. He is very patient, and methodical. My son's math grades rose dramatically, and he actually enjoyed doing math with Steve. We highly recommend him as a tutor.
Steve is a great tutor and we are very lucky to find him. He is very patient and experienced. He found out my daughter's problem after first class. He helped my daughter become more mindful when doing math work. He also helped her going through SAT prep sessions, which greatly helped her improve her SAT score from 700 to 760. We were very happy about the result. Thank you Steve!
Steve arrived right on time and got established quickly, getting right into the heart of the material with my son. After an hour and a half, my son felt more confident about the difficult problems they'd covered. My son is looking forward to more sessions.
Steve has a great way of breaking down the lessons step-by-step. After only three sessions, my son's grades are on the upswing. Nice, positive, and calm approach.
My daughter has worked with Steve for 2 school years now, for Honors Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2. She has been able to keep her grades at a high level, and her confidence in her math ability is high. Steve has helped her in her thinking about math and problem solving, her technique and skills especially in word problems, and in preparation for many tests. I hope that my daughter will continue to work with Steve during her Junior year for Pre-calculus and Statistics/Probability courses.
Steve has been a terrific math tutor for our son. According to our son, "Steve is kind, very helpful, he guides me through the problems in a gentle way, and makes me feel successful." Math has always been difficult for our son and has caused a lot of frustration. Now, he willingly and happily heads over to Steve each week. We are thrilled!
Steve tutored our son for pre-calc during his junior year in high school. He was great. Steve was extremely patient and always spent as much time as was necessary to help our son master the material. He was reliable and extremely flexible when schedule changes were necessary. We felt lucky to have found him through Wyzant.
Steve stepped in at a time when I suddenly lost my existing tutor and was in dire straights as my kids really struggle in math. He righted the ship immediately. Within one session he has my kids organized, focused, understanding and ready to succeed! I strongly recommend Steve!
Steve did an excellent job this year with our son on 9th grade honors algebra. Steve identified the areas that our son had not mastered in the first marking period and did a review and teaching of that material to get him understanding and up to speed. Steve then aligned his weekly work with our son to match the lessons and materials that was current in school (Steve got a copy of the text book on his own to prepare the weekly tutoring session.) He also set up a home study plan for our son. In total Steve did about eight tutoring sessions (one per week with our son). The result has been that our son went from a D in the first marking period to a B in the second marking period. He also has become more motivated to succeed in his math, and as a result Steve and we agreed that we could stop his tutoring sessions; but if he has any difficulties in the future we will certainly utilize Steve again. Steve was very flexible and accommodating to schedules and length of session as needed, and is a very nice guy. Highly recommended.
An excellent teacher and tutor! Steve is able to focus in on where I need help, explain things so I understand them, and seems to have a thorough understanding of math topics. Recommended!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with several students now on the Science section of the ACT test. There are a number of challenges on this test, including sorting through the information in many graphs and charts, careful reading of the question, thinking and coming to conclusions, and definitely time management. Setting a reasonable and achievable goal, practice tests, honing use of testing strategies specific to this test, and pacing are some of the keys to success that I give to my students on the ACT Science test.
I have 5 years of experience teaching high school math including Algebra 1, and have tutored dozens of Algebra students one-on-one.
Algebra is such a fundamental skill for all further math courses, that it really needs to be mastered. And to do so, students need to have solid capabilities from earlier pre-algebra years, such as with arithmetic, fractions, decimals, negative numbers. I assess those abilities early in our sessions together, and incorporate practice as needed. Then students are more successful in learning the so-important skills in Algebra such as solving equations and inequalities, graphing functions, factoring, solving word problems.
I make sure they master the Algebra topics, and often while relating them to each student's own interest such as sports, music, gaming, dance, or possible career path, and occasionally using on-line drills and games for fun and skill-building. My students improve their mastery, confidence, and grades.
I have 5 years of experience teaching high school math including Algebra 2, and have tutored dozens of Algebra 2 students one-on-one.
A frequent downfall of students in Algebra 2 is weakness on fundamentals from earlier grades, such as in equation solving, graphing, working with negative numbers, fractions, and exponents. I look at these skills early in our sessions together, and incorporate strengthening exercises as needed. Then we can more successfully access Algebra 2 topics without continually tripping when solving problems in such topics as Quadratic and Polynomial Functions and Inequalities, Trigonometry, Conic Sections, Rational Expressions and Equations, Exponential and Logarithmic relations.
I have a good track record of raising students' skills and grades.
I am an experienced high school math teacher, and engineer, and have been tutoring math and Calculus for 7 years. I have helped more than a dozen students in Calculus so far, of varying levels from introductory, AP Calculus, to College Freshman Calculus.

I have 5 years of experience teaching high school Geometry, and have tutored dozens of Geometry students one-on-one.
Students are 1st introduced to the use of logic in high school geometry, and this is a new skill to develop, and essential to complete proofs.
This is the biggest help I give Geometry students - I have them approach a problem both from the conclusion, working backward ("for this to be true, what do I need? How can I get that?") and forward ("Given this, what does it do for me? And what else can I get from it? How does it link to what I need?"). I have THEM talk out the problem using this logic, with a little coaching, until they have solved it, and then they can write proofs with ease.
I also enhance learning and test performance by understanding just where students are often weak, and making sure they have solid skills in the many Geometry topics such as Parallel Lines & Angles, Transformations, Right Triangles and Trigonometry, Circles, Sectors, Tangents, etc.
I have a deep understanding of physics from my education and work as an engineer, and have tutored more than 2 dozen students in Physics, so far. Students seem to have the most trouble in a few areas:
-In mechanics, after studying motion in 1 and 2 dimensions, force, and friction, then analyzing complex motion problems such as objects on an incline, using pulleys, or with multiple forces.
-Electrical circuits with multiple branches.
-Understanding & working with myriad new units of measure (Newtons, Joules, Coulombs, Watts, Volts, Amps, etc).
I help students with a more organized and thoughtful approach to problem solving, and to develop a deeper understanding and insight into the big ideas in Physics (and have raised grades as a result).
I have 5 years of experience as a High School Math teacher, depth in math topics in Calculus and beyond from my education and work as an engineer, and have tutored 2 dozen or more Precalculus students one-on-one.
Precalculus is both preparation for a following calculus course, AND often a last course in discrete math, so it covers a wide range of topics, some of which are not specifically useful to calculus (such as probability and combinatorics). It relies on solid skills from previous courses in Algebra 1 and 2.
I find that students are often challenged in precalculus by the depth of thought, longer procedures, new material not seen in earlier courses, and by their need to use skills from earlier courses such as in function analysis and graphing, equation solving, exponents and logarithms. I work with them to gain understanding of the new material, and to successfully apply a wide range of necessary skills, increasing their mastery, confidence, and grades.
I have been successfully helping student prepare for, and improved their performance, on the SAT math sections for 7 years. I am fully prepared and practiced in the 'new' SAT from 2016 onward. Your student will be working one-on-one with me on SAT problems of exactly the type(s) they most need to practice. We will establish goals and a rough timeline before we start. We will work together out of several published SAT prep & practice books that I recommend. Your student can do extra prep in between sessions if they have the time and motivation, or work just during our sessions.
While a big-name SAT prep company may have a class with nice 'packaging', they won't work effectively with your student's individual strengths and weaknesses like I will. Your student won't sit and sleep through a class lecture, they will be working one-on-one with me on SAT problems of exactly the type(s) they most need to practice.

Tutoring Statistics, typically to high school Seniors. I help them better understand their classroom lessons, by discussing the material, answering and asking questions, doing homework together, reviewing material, teaching missed classes, extending their thinking. Especially, I help them move from dry statistics to much more interesting application to their own interest, such as anthropology, business, sports, international relations, etc.
