Dear Student:
I am 60 years old with two daughters that have been through the college experience one is 33 and graduated from Louisiana Tech the other is 22 and is in her final semester at LSU in internal auditing. I have helped many young people that I worked with over the years and take great pride in their accomplishments. I recently helped a young lady go from being a CAD operator to being an instrument designer in Baton Rouge which resulted in her tripling her salary. Admittedly she was an exceptional student but I am a good communicator and utilize multiple approaches to learning. Obviously there is no substitute for experience and I have a lot of it and enjoy giving back.

With an exceptional track record of delivering innovative instrumentation solutions and leading major field engineering projects, I am now seeking an opportunity to contribute valuable expertise to your education. Having successfully directed cross-functional teams, built productive relationships with clients and delivered complex projects on time and within budget, I am certain I can immediately become a key asset to your career development. I have a great grasp of AutoCAD and understand fully the preparation of detail design drawings. Throughout my 35 year engineering career in Industrial arenas that include: Pharmaceutical, Petro-Chemical, Oil Production, Power Generation and Cryogenics I have relied heavily on practical math skills for solving real world problems. I have worked from Maine to California and spent many years in Alaska on the North Slope and in Valdez which has allowed me to experience diverse engineering methods. No matter what discipline in engineering you pursue be it instrument / electrical, civil / structural, or piping the truth of the matter is engineering boils down to math. I am a subscriber to the Khan Academy and believe than Sal Khan's practical teaching methods are invaluable.

My real passion is history. I am extremely well read in the history of western civilization having been completely hooked by my college professor at USL in 1976 when he challenged me to read "Tragedy and Hope" by Carroll Quigley. Maybe the most important book of my generation as it delves into the truth about the international banking community and their influence on world events since the 18th century. I am fan of Winston Churchill and believe him to be the single most important figure in the modern age. I conclude with one of his most famous quotes “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

I took theoretical and applied calculus at Nicholls State and was exempted from the final exams in both courses but that is not why I can help. I can help because I use Algebra and Geometry everyday during the course of preparing engineering documentation. When you do load calculations, wire sizing, conduit fill ratios, cable tray fill ratios, cable tray drawings and control panel drawings daily you learn that every inch matters, every clearance matters. I can relate mathematical formulas to practical applications in order to better illustrate their value in real world problem solving.

If you are struggling with a particular course or subject matter let me help you. The important thing is never give up because you can do it! You may just need a little coaching.

Sincerely,
Tom
