When I taught science at high school, I would always try to make myself available for after-school tutoring. This gave me valuable experience in reaching the students that need extra attention. The one on one lets me get straight to the root of their problem. Sometimes, when there is more than one student, I allow one student to tutor the other with my guidance. This seems to be a very good experience for all.
It is a very good feeling to finally hit on the one thing that allows the student to understand the concept. Because it is one on one, you know immediately that the student has grasped the concept.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
