My tutoring experience comes from many places. First I directed and tutored in my own 501 c 3 nonprofit after-school and all day summer program in the Atlanta Metropolitan area for 15 years. I taught elementary school children to read and tutored elementary and middle school students in all subjects with math emphasis. Secondly, I tutored for six months in a Federal tutoring program, where all subjects were taught to middle school students. In addition to those things, I taught middle school and high school students English, 7th grade math, and Algebra for one year under the Abekka curriculum for one year in a Christian school. I have extensive college coursework complete in middle math education.

My greatest strengths are in math and English grammar, but I have tutored children and youth in all their subjects on a daily basis in the after-school program. I enabled many students to improve their grade averages, but the most notable two are a student I helped move from an F to an A in 6th grade math in 4 months and a second grade student who had failed a grade, ADD, and could not learn to read. I worked with him for a year and a half, and he looked up at me one day and said, "Ms. Lea, I can read!" and proceeded to read book after book. This is what motivates tutors and teachers to continue in the blessed task of motivating and enabling students to get past their difficulties to the place of enlightenment. Let me help your child reach that point.

My latest success was in April and May of 2016 when I tutored a fifth grade student in grammar. In the span of two months we brought a failing grade up to a C. Who knows what we could accomplish in the next few months we work together. Don't you want that for your child? Don't wait until they go back to school. Let's start working on it together before your child is struggling again to keep up.

Grammar

Grammar

As a fifth grade student my teacher told my mother that I needed more than he could give me and suggested giving me extra work. Grammar was one of my best subjects, and my proficiency level was high. For 15 years I tutored many elementary and middle school students, and grammar was one of the subjects upon which we concentrated. I also taught both middle school and high school English which included a stringent grammar component.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have directed and tutored students in this age range for 15 years with great success. Our after school tutoring program was given an award three years in a row for best after school program in the county. A teacher from the local elementary school would refer students to our program, because she saw the improvement her students that were in our program made in her classroom. One of the six grade students I tutored moved from an F in math to an A in four months. The children I tutored had homework in every subject, but I trained children to read, to use phonics in spelling, to work on increasing their vocabulary, and helped them with each subject they had in school through review of their homework and what was covered that day in their class. I am qualified to teach math to elementary and middle school children through my training at the local university and through experience tutoring for over 15 years.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I tutored elementary school children and middle school children for over 15 years in math, reading and vocabulary. I have a minor in math and middle school math education for teacher's certification. I taught algebra and seventh grade math for one year in a local Christian school that has since closed.

Phonics,

Phonics

I learned phonics when I was in school, and I learned to read with this technique. I used these same techniques in tutoring the children in my after school program for 15 years. We used phonics workbooks to teach them and to allow them to practice learning phonics.
Reading,

Reading

As a child and youth I read voraciously, and at twelve, I was reading at a twelfth grade level. At 47 years of age I started, ran, and tutored in an after school and all day summer program where in the latter years we started a reading program for elementary school children where I was a part of teaching those children to read. One of my most notable successes was the result of working with a Hispanic ADD second grade student who failed kindergarten because of language and attention problems; he could not read at all. After working a year and a half with him, he turned to me one day and said, "Ms. Lea, I can read!" He proceeded to read book after book to show me that he could do it.
Spelling,

Spelling

I rallied in spelling in high school and placed third in a state spelling rally. Because I read voraciously, I learned many new words which I added to an already wide vocabulary. Working in my own after school program, I taught phonics to elementary school children and worked on their spelling homework with them every day. When I taught English in a Christian school, I had a student who struggled greatly with being able to spell. I worked for a year in extra tutoring after class to teach him how to spell.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

At twelve years old I was reading at a twelfth grade level. As a result my vocabulary was very advanced. Because I read voraciously, I learned many new words which I added to an already wide vocabulary. I also taught English to middle and high school students; working with vocabulary was a part of the curriculum.

English

English

English was one of my best subjects in school including high school where I was in an advanced class. I taught English one year in a Christian school to middle and high school students. The school used the Abeka curriculum, which is an excellent and very stringent and thorough teaching method.
