Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am a certified teacher in LA. I hold a lifetime teaching certificate and have taught child to adults with special needs, including students with ADD/ADHD, Austism, and Aspergers. Often these children are placed into the same classroom to receive help making it through the school year. While earning my B.A.E. I student taught in both the regular education setting as well as a special needs setting. I have found techniques that work with students with these disabilities and know you just have to be patient while finding out what works. While working on my M.Ed. I took multiple courses in psychology and behavior management. These courses have given me a firm foundation from which to build on while planning lessons and strategies that will make any one of these groups of children or adults feel successful.

Algebra 1

I am qualified to tutor in Algebra because as a certified teacher, working with Learning Disabled students, I have tutored many students in all areas of math. I have also been with my students in inclusion Algebra and Geometry. I also have done private tutoring for all areas of math up to Trigonometry.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a certified teacher in LA. I hold a lifetime teaching certificate and have taught child to adults with special needs, including students with ADD/ADHD, Austism, and Aspergers. Often these children are placed into the same classroom to receive help making it through the school year. While earning my B.A.E. Dyslexia

I am a certified special needs teacher. I have a lifetime certificate in Louisiana, and hold active certificates in Mississippi and Alabama. I have taught in a special needs class for 23 years and have worked with students from ages 5 to 85. I have taught students with dyslexia and have certain techniques that I have found to be very helpful when teaching these students. The techniques help the dyslexic student to better understand their disability and what they can do when reading to overcome it. I feel that after working with these students I am qualified to work as a tutor to help anyone trying to learn to read or improve their reading skills.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an LA Teaching Certificate, Class A, Lifetime. I have been a substitute in all elementary grades as well as middle school. I have also spent 19 years in the classroom teaching everything from Kindergarten to Eighth grade across the curriculum. I have taught in both the regular education classroom as well as Sp. Needs classrooms; I am certified to teach in both areas. I hold a BAE in Elem Ed/ Sp.Ed from the Univ. of New Orleans and hold an MEd with a concentration on Special Needs Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in School Admin. from Nichols State University.

Phonics

As a certified teacher, graduating with a dual certification BAE in Elem. Ed. and Spec. Educ. with an emphasis on students with mild/moderate disabilities, I taught in the special needs classroom for 23 years. I found that many of my students were very phonetic spellers. I had to create many ways for them to learn to spell these words correctly and not just phonetically. I also went back to school and received my M.Ed. in Curr and Instruction of students with Learning Disabilities. My minor was in School Administration. Through all the classes I have taken in school as well as my practical application of techniques in the classroom, I feel more than able to teach phonetic skills in an effort to improve reading comprehension skills across the curriculum.

Prealgebra

I am an LA certified teacher. I taught at the middle school level (6-8) for more than 10 years. During this time I tutored students in all math, English, Science, Reading and Language areas. When taking the required test in Prealgebra for WyzAnt I scored a perfect 100%.

Special Needs

I am a certified teacher holding a lifetime teaching certificate in LA. I have a B.A.E. in Elem. Educ. and Spec. Educ. I received this degree from the University of New Orleans. I also hold a M.Ed in Spec. Educ. with a minor in administration. I have 23 years of teaching experience in the Spec. Educ. setting. I have taught students with specific learning disability, dyslexia, TBI, ADHD/ADD, EDP, BDP, and a multitude of other classifications. I have also been an inclusion teacher at the high school level, teaching everything from freshmen English to Algebra II to Chemistry.

I have a vast knowledge of techniques that are tried and true, but will work with each student to find the right action plan and teaching technique for them. Students do not all learn from one cookie cutter technique. With each student you must work to find what is right for them as an individual. I would like this description to also serve as my request for dyslexia certification. Thank you.

Study Skills

As a Special Education teacher for 19 years, I have taught my students many different study skills to help them cover material that needs to be read. I use techniques such as prescanning the material looking at the topics, possible questions that they will be answering, looking at words that are in bold print and reading their information that goes with it, breaking the material down into smaller sections to read, then answering the questions that go with that section, then reading the next section and answering the questions and continue this until they are finished. I also use a technique to help students take notes in class. In doing this I show them how to use shorthand for certain words so that they can keep up with what the teacher is telling them. I also have a binder system that all my students use. This keeps them stay organized and makes it simpler for the students to find their materials to study and where to return it to. I also teach my students different ways to learn materials for tests. If they have to learn a list in a specific order I have them make a sentence (which does not have to make sense) with the first letter of each word to help them recall the words in order. I could go on, but I have a plethora of ideas I use depending on the individual student.
